Thread: Device Manager will not launch from the Control Panel

Device Manager will not launch from the Control Panel

If I go to Control Panel || System and Maintenance || System and select
Device Manager from the taks list, I get the following error message:

    C:\Windows\System32\devmgmt.msc

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

I checked, and the *.MSC association is there. I can get to Device Manager
by going to the Run... dialog and typing "devmgmt.msc" and if I switch to the
Control Panel "Classic" view I can run Device Manager just by double-clicking
    on it's icon.

    How can I fix this??

    Hi Speedy,

    >> I checked, and the *.MSC association is there.

Some part of the .msc file class data may be missing. See if applying the .msc fix from here helps.

doesn't help. i tried even the "File association fixes for Windows
Vista" fix 'File association fixes for Windows Vista'
    but doesn't help neighter.

i go to control panel, system, click on tasks: Device Manager and
    receive: c:\Windows\system32\devmgmt.msc
the file does not have a program associated with it.....

when i double click it in explorer, it opens correctly. when i right
click on it open with, it reads microsoft management console...
    the trouble is somewhere else...

On The Right Pane The Default Value should read -

well, i am back where i was. after reinstall!
i reinstalled Vista x64, applied sp1 rtm, and now, after one crash (now
i know what drivers are they waiting for with SP1) am i back where i was
    - i cannot launch device manager from control panel/system.
i can launch it as C:\Windows\System32\devmgmt.msc or by any and all
other methods, just not from there. funny, eh? will check with
sysinternal registry/file monitors soon, i guess.

    Hi, Mossi.

Since you did not quote any part of the prior discussion, we have no idea
what you might be talking about. :>(

Are you an Administrator of your Vista? Are you running as Administrator?

We are here because we want to help you. But you have to give us SOMETHING

I've had this problem and solved it after reading this link:
'Vista Device Manager link broken by notepad alternative, JujuEdit'

The article says to carefully check what registry entries you have in
    the
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers tree

compare the keys you see on your computer with those from another clean
    installation of Vista.

I've found a difference in the ContextMenuHandlers tree, I had a
registry key referring to a file called CopyPathExt.dll and after I
removed the registry key, the Device Manager in the System dialog box
    link began to work again!!!

Attached is an image of the
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers tree after removing the
    CopyPathExt.dll mentioned above.
