'Burn Failure' trying to burn a video DVD inside Vista Media Cente

I used to be able to burn video DVDs from Media Center but now I can't. I
can still burn data DVDs but every time I try to burn one in video format I
get the 'Burn Failure' message as well as a popup in Vista telling me that
SBEServer was stopped by DEP.

Since this used to work, I guessing that some setting or component was
changed but I don't know what it was. Is there a way to remove and reinstall
the DVD burning components of Vista Media Center?

Same problem just happen recently anyone find an answer please let me know,
was it a recent microsoft patch that screwed it up?

I'm not sure yet what caused this. I do have auto updates enabled.

This is now starting to look like a codec issue. This error happens when I
try to burn .avi files but everything seems to work OK for recorded TV, .mpg
and .wmv files.

Did you intall any codecs?

Does anyone know how to get the original codecs back in place?

dialog, what data does it give you? That should probably indirectly
identify the problematic codec here. =)

Yes, we are having the same problems. It is very frusterating that we spend
all this money and it doesn't work at all the way Windows XP did. If we had
known buying a new notebook meant learning a completely new system we
would've gone with Macs!

I'm under the impression that this error is occuring because bad third party
software was installed to the system. Vista is verifying that your software
is not writing to random and bad places in memory. It seems like you have
installed software that is writing to random and bad places in memory - the
DEP check is only pointing this out, as opposed to letting your system
become randomly corrupt.

So:
What codec do the source files in question use? You may not know, but that
would be of value.
Did you install the third party "Vista Codec Pack"? In a very similar case,
that was the culprit, and removing that solved the issue. Or you can
convert the AVI to WMV and then burn it.

It would be of high value to both of us to identify and remove whatever bad
software was installed here that is crashing. If you could help me with
that by providing further data, that would be great.

I cannot bur recorded TV (recorded w/Media Center) to DVD. I have a Dell XPS
410 w/ Intel Core 2 6600 @2.4 GHz, 2 X 500 GB HD and 4 GB RAM. I just
upgraded from XP to Vista Home Premier. I get the same error being discussed
here "SBEServer has stopped working." followed by "The Media Center
Extensibility Host has stopped working." I seem to have the following video
codecs installed. It worked fine with XP. ANy help would be greatly
appreciated.

What are the details of that crash as present in the Problem Reports and
Solutions center?
will help you look that up if you don't know how.

In WMP's Help:about:Technical Support Information menu tool, what MPEG/DVD
decoders does it list? The exception you're hitting seem to be related to a
filter that is not named in the crash data, so that 'unknown' codec/filter
is quite interesting - the WMP list may be very helpful.

That's a lot of third party filters here - what other MPEG/DVD
tools/players/editors do you have installed?
Does Roxio or Sonic have updates here... ?

Are you using any other of those filters? It's not optimum to have lots of
those on your system, and that should pretty directly to be the source of
the failure here...

I have Roxio intstalled, but I would rather use Media Center to burn recorded
TV onto DVD. What is the minium list of codecs/filters/etc I can use?

I am having similar problems and don't know how to access the Tech info. Do
I get it from the "Player". I am using the "Center". This below is my
problem. I was directed from another thread, where I thought I was in the
Vista Community but they said not....even though my page suggested it
was.....confusing.....

From the Start Page, there are a list of options which on my version
include, TV & Movie, Sports, Cyberlink MakekDVD, Online Media, and Tasks.

From the Tasks option, I can choose burn cd/dvd, select options: video DVD
and click next.....then Name DVD, Select location of file: Recorded TV,
Click on the show clip and click Next. The message reads: Media Center has
stopped working....A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
From here the screen is black with the error box showing and no mouse....so I
must use ctl-alt-del to bring up the task manager and shut it down.

If I attempt to burn from the Cyberlink MakeDVD option, I get an error
message that "Make DVD can only run on Windows XP" in spite of the fact it
came bundled with Vista.

From the Recorded TV option, when I click on the show slip and then choose
burn CD/DVD, I again get the system shutting down as above.

If I attempt from Control Panel to uninstall the MakeDVD 1.0 program, I get
a "SEVERE" error message that reads, "The installation will be terminated at
this time. This software is intended for Windows XP only."

There is no Help from within Media Center and I can not seem to locate any
way to choose or change the third party software that Media Centre relies on
for the burn feature. Since I have Roxio, it would make sense to associate
that. On the Start Menu it references Windows DVD maker, and this is a
program unfamiliar to me.

Finally, since this all works in a "friendly" atmosphere, I have no idea
what format the final outcome should be in, and if it is even compatible in
an entertainment DVD, ie for watching TV, not going in to another computer.

OK, now finally, I was extremely comfortable moving about XP but obviously
need much more time to get comfortable with Vista.

The minimum list depends upon what you're trying to do. I don't know why
you have Sonic or Roxio installed, but those have installed their own MPEG
filters that will be in the mix. The "minimum list of codecs" is something
you would probably need to define for yourself if you're going to be loading
third party MPEG tools onto your system.

If you temporarily remove/disable Sonic or Roxio, does this scenario then
work?

You should talk to Cyberlink about the MakeDVD issue - they would be in the
best position to know about that.

the Problem Reports and Solutions center?

I had this problem too. Just fixed it by downloading and installing
'ffdshow'; the codec Vista uses to do it's burning in Media Center.

version you may have. It should fix the problem! Did for me.
