Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

Hi

My system crashes and I get a blue screen everytime i try to play xvid
video. I've tried using both VLC and Kopei's codec with WMP.

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with the following hardware:
Core 2 Duo E6400
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 iP965
2x1024MB Corsair XMS2-6400
Gigabyte GeForce 7600GT SilentPipe II 256MB

I've googled the subject and found a thread at anandtech with people having
similar problems:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...readid=2007145

Anyone know if there is a solution or explination?

/ Anders

Do you get any information about the blue screen in your event log?

You're using the 32bit version of Koepi with the 32bit player, right?
(There are 64bit versions available...)

About half the top twenty crashes in WMP-Vista are caused by:
mmswitch.ax (remove this on sight)
divxdec.dll (get the latest version)
xvidcore.dll (get the latest version)
ffdshow.ax (get the latest version)

That may not cover you, but ... just an FYI in case it *does* apply. =\

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

Hi again, and thx for a quick reply.

The only thing I get in the eventlog is:
"Audit events have been dropped by the transport. The real time backup file
was corrupt due to improper shutdown."
and:
"The previous system shutdown at 20:13:35 on 2007-03-12 was unexpected."

When the system reboots it blames the hardware for the failure.

I (think) I'm using the 32-bit version of both Kopei's and VLC. I've been
looking around for 64-bit versions but i can't find any. I'm using:
Kopei's version: XviD-1.1.2-01112006.exe
VLC version: vlc-0.8.6a-win32.exe (obviously not 64-bit)

Do you know where I can get a hold of 64-bit versions?

I've looked for the files you mentioned but I don't have any of those.

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

I don't recall where the 64bit XVID was... *checks* ... no, I've lost track
of it, sorry. It could have been an optical illusion, but I'm pretty
certain those more familiar with Koepi XVID might know. The web sites
didn't mention anything, but I'm pretty sure I saw people referencing this
during the Vista beta. =\

As re: the blue screen: Open the Start menu. Click All Programs. Select
"Maintenance". Select "Problems Reports and Solutions". Click "View Problem
History". Look for the crash/error in question. Double-click the report in
question. What is that data? (You can use "Copy to Clipboard" to easily
include this data in your message.)

This assumes that the data is there. I had forgotten that this look-up was
a lot easier way of getting that data - my apologies.

Btw, another guy who has the exact same problem has posted in the anandtech
forum i mentioned in my first post. We are now three guys with this problem,
and the only hardware we have in common are RAM, 800Mhz DDR2 from Corsair.
Prolly just a coinsidence, but it feels like this is a hardware issue..

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

Hi, again

I discovered that I had the same problem when playing DVDs with the default
32-bit WMP. So i tried switching to the 64-bit WMP and now, for the first
time ever, I've succesfullt played an entire movie on my system.

It seems that the solution to my problem would be to get a hold of 64-bit
codecs for XviD/DivX so that I can play those formats in the 64-bit WMP as
well. Problem is now that I can't seem to find 64-bit codecs..

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on VistaUltimate x64 - anders

Hi, I get the same problem.

But when I try to upgrade to the 64Bit version of WMP from microsoft's site, it tells me my 32Bit version of WMP is newer than the version I'm trying to install, and it aborts. So I'm stuck.

I have an ATI Radion 1300 Pro video card with the latest Catalyst drivers, but I still feel they are the cause. There doesn't seem to be a hardware acceleration option for this card within Vista, so I can't tune it down.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

Both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of WMP comes with Vista x64, so no need to
download it (assuming that you are running Vista x64). For more information
about switching the default player to the 64-bit version see:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/0...64-as-default/

I recommend you to try the 64-bit player first before you choose it as your
default player. Do this by running the wmplayer.exe in C:\Program
Files\Windows Media Player\. The 32-bit WMP resides in the C:\Program Files
(x86)\ directory.

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

...forgot to say that I no longer have any problem with playing any video
format. Switching to the 64-bit WMP and installing Vista Codec Pack and VCP
x64 Components (google it) did the trick.

Re: Blue screen during video playback (xvid) on Vista Ultimate x64

I am having the same problem on Windows 7.

I have tried ALL of the fixes that you recommend to no avail. When I switched to the 64bit player I was able to play through 1.5 movies before it bluescreened on me again. Better than the 5 mins that I was getting before. Now however I cant get through 5 minutes again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
