it as the installer says "Vista already includes Defender"

Is there a work around to my dumb mistake???

I have Vista Home Premium and did the same thing. I still have not figured
out how to reinstall or activate what is left on my computer. I still have
the Windows Defender files on my C: Drive but cannot open them. I deactivated
them someway. I recieved the same error message when trying to reinstall. I
also cannot delete what is left in my system.

    RE: How to reinstall Defender

Hi you can reinstall defender by using the restore option on your computer by
going through the start menu and accessories to system tools and restore. You
will see many restore points and the defender uninstall will show up. just
restore to the point before the uninstall. I did this and defender came back
    and is working perfectly.
I hope this helps everyone. Eileen

I also would like to know how you uninstalled Defender because I'm trying to
do that now and I can't seem to find a way to do it.

You can't uninstall Defender. It can be turned off, but non uninstalled.

possible fix to windows defender in vista problems i.e. error 0x80070002 &0x80070006

Hi all I too had the same problem with uninstalling my beta version of defender after upgrading from xp to vista and after lengthy searching I think Ive finally found a fix. Please read and follow the following carefully. The root cause of 0x8007006 is similar as 0x8007002. It can be caused by damaged registry information or Windows Defend files.

    Step 1: Back up Registry

    ==================

    1. Click Start, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the search bar and press Enter.

    2. In the Registry Editor, click File menu, and click Export.

    3. In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the backup.

    4. In the File Name box, and type a name for your backup file, such as "Options" or "Backup".

    5. Click Save.

Step 2: Create and Run the Registry File

    ==================

    1. Click Start, type "notepad C:\register.reg" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar, and then click OK. Choose Yes when you are prompted to create a new file.

    2. Copy the following texts between the star marks and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file. When saving this file you must save it as the exact same file name as you gave to the registry backup file you saved earlier as this must replace that file.

    3. Double click on the notepad file you just saved
    4. When you receive a message box asking "Are you sure you want to add the information in the REG file to the registry", choose "Yes"

    5. You will receive another message box saying "Information in the REG file has been successfully entered into the registry", please click "OK" to confirm.

    6. Restart the computer.

I hope this info is helpful as it has worked for me and finally got rid of this headache for me. Regards

possible fix to windows defender in vista problems i.e. error 0x80070002 &0x80070006

Hi all. What happened with me was that I didn't uninstall my beta version prior to upgrading to vista premium and then after I upgraded the beta version was still showing up in the "uninstall or change programs list". When I "uninstalled it" it removed the beta version but took some essential files with it from the windows vista version of defender. You have to uninstall it before fixing the windows vista version of defender. After which time You can begin the fix process which I've already explained(above, in previous message).
[B]Note: The windows vista version of defender does not and is not supposed to show up on your "change or uninstall programs list". If you have one showing there then its the beta version. Hope this helps!!B]

    repairing vista windows defender

Just wanted to let you know the fix posted by Cdn ninja worked for me and I am not a advanced computer user. I had upgraded from xp to vista using a Dell upgrade disk and developed the defender problem. Following the cdn ninja instructions corrected the problem.

    RE: How to reinstall Defender

    You might try this.

Go to the main Windows Update window and click on "Installed Updates" (on
the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom), and then remove "Update for
    Microsoft Windows (KB931099)" (only).

Reboot. Reboot again. Go back to Windows Update, and re-install the same
update, by clicking on the Check for Updates button.

Other folks may have additional ideas for you; hope this helps a bit, see if
    that helps.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

    Good luck
