Vista hangs after updates

I've just gotten a new machine with Vista Home on it. All seems to be fine,
but after any windows updates, the next time i restart/reboot the computer
windows hangs just as it's loading the desktop, forcing me to reset the
computer, go into safe mode and do a system restore to preceed the update.

I've switched automatic updates off for now until i find the solution. Any
thoughts?

Re: Vista hangs after updates

Does it seem to be any update or just one specific one?
Have you contacted the manufacturer about this yet?

Re: Vista hangs after updates

It seems to be any and all updates. Basically, anytime i do any sort of
update, when it reboots, or if i turn the computer off and then back on, it
starts to boot fine into my identity, loads up the start menu, the new clock,
notepad, weather function things (sorry, i forgot what they call that) even
loads up Windows live Messenger but seems to hang loading up the desktop...
the hour glass icon comes up and i can't click on anything. All i can do is
restart the computer, go into safe made and go to my last system restore
point before any updates, which is of course a pain.

I thought it may have had something to do with my external firewire drive,
but i've tried with them detached and the same thing happens,

Any thoughts? Anyone else having this problem?

Re: Vista hangs after updates

Could be one or more files needed got corrupted. Is that weather
gadget a third party offering? Try disabling it, they're easy to turn
on again. Otherwise you may have to try a repair from the Vista DVD.
Go to Help, enter 'startup repair tool' to learn more. That's about
the only way to recover short of reinstalling if some files got
corrupted.

Anything in any Event Log?

It could be a driver not installing. Have you tried telling Vista to
make a boot log so you get a list of what Vista tried to load and
failed to load when it boots?

Re: Vista hangs after updates

Thanks for writing.

As it turns out, i tried disabling my firewire card yesterday. Everything
worked fine. So i went and found a new driver and now everything seems to be
ok. I tried a few restarts yesterday that worked, so i'll see how i go today!

Such a simple thing that i hadn't thought of..

Now if they'd only have Vista Anytime Upgrade in Australia..

I had simpilar problems with my vista - it would hang after updates and after
boot up and sit there for 20 minutes before anything would work. Then you go
and run a program ( it would ask you if you really wanted to run it?) - no
I'm just doing it for fun? Then it would hang there - had alot of trouble
with drivers. Seems video drivers would crash and caused would of the hangs (
only knew this from reboot went vist a reported the video driver was
recovered) During the hang periods - I would try the task manager to see what
the problem was but it starts minized and it was no help - So I said the hell
with it and reload XP pro back on my pc. IT flies now - no problems
everything works great! Vista OS is a piece of SH@#$%^T - I don't recommend
it to anybody ( if there friends of you) Now it there not then give it to
them. Maybe we should give Vista OS to the Iranians!!

RE: Vista hangs after updates

Sorry 1st time posting.
Hey , jason here.
I've just got my machine as well with vista premium sp1.
My vista hangs quite often , when i open a few programmes ( msn, itunes, ie )
not too much right .
I mean there's no lag at all, it just hangs. Also happens when starting
vista, just blank black screen.
So when i force shutdown, and restart. i'll enter vista repair something. It
enters windows, repair then it'll just be that way. i have to force shutdown
again.
Can you provide me answers, whether it's vista or hardware.
If hardware, lets say my graphic card is faulty : would this be the symptoms ?

RE: Vista hangs after updates

I'm having a similar issue & had to turn off my updates as well. Suddenly was
unable to connect to the internet... kept getting a message saying no
connection was available. Dell had me do a system restore, but I kept having
to restore to 8/6/08 every day in order to get online. The diagnostics I ran
all recognized that I had a strong and active broadband connection.

The correction that 'stagefright' wrote on 3/27 is too advanced... I don't
understand it!

RE: Vista hangs after updates

Same problem here. Unexpected hangs and restarts, all since a reinstallation
by service technicians, which left me with a computer that barely worked. I
had to get on the phone with a service specialist who guided me through the
rest of the installation. It was an incomplete load, and none of the
diagnostic testing had been completed. That was April.

Re: Vista hangs after updates

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook I purchased in March, 2009 and I am experiencing
the exact same problems you describe--it just happened today after an update
yesterday. Whenver there is an update, my computer will begin to hang on
startup. The hard disk light stays on, but Windows never finishes loading.
This can go on for a number of days before it mysteriosly resolves itself.
Another problem after update is that my computer will also mysteriously hang
when in use. It just stops responding and I can't bring up the task manager
or shut down. The only option is to do a power cycle.

I have been a long time Microsoft custmomer, but I think I will go a
different way in the future. My old IBM Thinkpad running Windows XP Pro never
had any problems. I used it every day for three years without any significant
problems. My new high-end laptop running Vista bogs down and fails everytime
there is a Windows update. I have no faith in the viabililty of the computer
and never know when it will become unavailable for many hours. I should add
that my machine has a clean installation without any additional hardware, has
virus protection, and is only used for professional work (I am a software
developer). So this is a Vista problem, not something I did to the machine.

I think that Microsoft should offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 for anyone
who had the misfortune of purchasing Vista. It is just ridiculous when you
purchase a new, higher end computer and expect to be upgrading your
experience, but instead you end up with something that is hardly functional.

Re: Vista hangs after updates

Greg, has an update broken a driver or something. Do Fujitsu have
anything you can refer to on the web?

My Vista 64 has been very stable for a long time now, so I don't think
the problems are truly Vista problems but rather something between your
hardware and Vista. Have you tried a different anti virus (Or even
remove it temporarily) since that may also be interfering. Just
suggestions, not saying you are wrong :)

I am a .NET software developer. I have never had a problem with Windows
Update on Vista on my HP DV9000 laptop I purchased back in April 2008. I
do manual updates, where as, I choose what updates I want and look at
them first. I don't let any update from MS come to my machine that's
hardware related, because it's nothing but trouble.

I am Death.
I have never had a problem with Windows Updates neither.
I don't let any hamsters run around inside the computer case.

You got a reason for being on my back?

Yeah yeah, do you and me a favor and don't play with 'Death' do it for
real and drop dead.

You really have no clue what happened do you?

Check your event viewer for errors. I would also recommend running a
chkdsk.

I could care less about you or anyone else playing the toll game.

Do I need one?
If you provide some reasons, I'll pick one.

Never said this was a game. This is serious business and a public forum.
So are you saying that you do care, but you care less? Maybe you should
have said that you "couldn't care less". Glad to know you still care. Your
turn to roll the dice.
