Windows Error during Complete PC Backup

Trying to do a Full backup using Vista Business , Fails with the following
error

The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)

Any ideas

System is dual boot with XP , backing up to external USB drive

I've seen this error during restores but not during backup. Can you email me
the .etl files from Windows\Logs\CompletePC\CompletePC.*.etl? Remove
"online" from my address.

Well, I googled 0x80070057 and there were no returns related to complete pc
backup. Could be a Vista bug (C++). I've used Complete PC backup here on a
couple of different PC's without issue.

I have seen some posts by others saying that in certain dual boot XP / Vista
scenarios, XP will mess with Vista's restore points, i.e., wipe them out.
That might be what's causing your problem... not saying it is... just taking
a SWAG that Complete PC Backup may be looking for, or trying to update,
"wiped out" restore points...

That would be my guess, I think it might be dualboot related.
I've used the complete PC backup on a few installations, but they are Vista
only & it works fine.
When you start the backup it makes a restore point, even on my machine with
system restore turned off, it makes a restore point immediately before
starting the backup.

For the various Complete PC Backup errors that we've investigated, none of
them were related to dual-booting. Not that I can rule that out, of course.
We'd need the log files to look at this further.

I receive the same message when attempting to use the Auto Backup to a CD on
a new laptop, running Windows Vista Business. It is not dual backup.

I have vista and its help says you cannot and when you try to read any drive
it will only show your RW drive. So unless you use another program explain
to me exactly how you do it please.

Can you confirm that you are getting the exact error as Mike (including the
error code), and not just the same behavior and error message text? Sorry to
have to ask but usually in these cases the code is slightly different.

I have a brand new HP laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have the
same problem. It occurs just after the volume shadow copy is complete.
If you check the DVD+RW that I am writing to it has a few files on it.
I have contacted HP and they say reload from scratch of course. That is
their answer to everything. Obviously I am not the only one having the
problem. I am an MCP currently pursuing my MCSE. I have searched
technet and the Microsoft support site. No luck finding anything. I
have used Norton 360 backup and it works fine so it is not hardware
related. If anyone finds the problem please email me and let me know.
I would prefer to use windows backup.

First, two address everyone who has responded, the problem that Mike Cook
found is probably not the same as what others have reported. We're still
investigating this but it appears to be related to how the drive was
re-imaged. I don't think this is the same problem as those who have brand
new computers and are backing up to CD/DVD.

SGS, will you email me the following information? Let me know if you have
questions about how to do this. My email address is correct minus "online."

1. A description of the problem, including the exact error message and error
code (a screenshot will work)
2. A screenshot of your Disk Management screen showing disks and volumes.
3. Contents of %windir%\logs\windowsbackup\
4. Generate a log file using the instructions below and email it to me:

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Asr,
create a new key called LogFileSetting

Under LogFileSetting, create a new DWORD value called EnableLogging.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter 00000001 (hexadecimal)
or 1 (decimal)

Under LogFileSetting, create a new String value called LogPathName.
Right-click that value, click Modify, and then enter C:\asr.log.

Next, reproduce the error. You should have a file called asr.log under c:\.

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate and trying to backup to a USB hard
Drive.

Originally I was able to backup using the Automatic File backup - I
haven't been able to for about a month. I have reformatted the external
drive in case there wasn't enough space on it. Still getting the same
errors though!

Vista File Backup and Complete PC Backup work just fine with USB hard drives
(and DVDs too).

Thank you Ian - but until a 6 weeks ago Vista was happily backing up to
the USB Hard Drive - now I get the errors as indicated and I can't even
change the parameters - I get the error message as indicated in my
post.

Strange when Microsoft say you cannot do so.

I and many others backup/image to USB hard drives (and DVDs) with no problems
whatsoever.

Thanks Ian - I can assure you it was doing it! You're not confusing a
USB hard drive with a USB Memory stick are you?

Anyway I still need to sort this problem out - And regardless as to
whether or not it will back up to a hard drive or not - pl;ease remember
that I get the error message when I try to change the parameters - long
before I get into backing up to any sort of hard drive. If I could sort
that part out we could then argue happily for some time about whether or
not we can back up to a USB hard drive or not!

From Vista's Help and Support:

"External hard disks. If your computer has a USB port, you can attach an
external hard disk to it and then back up files to the external disk. Be sure to
buy an external hard disk that has plenty of space for your backups (200 GB is a
good choice). For maximum protection, keep your external hard disk in a
fireproof location separate from the computer."

Search Help and Support for "Backup".

Well I'm glad (and I hope) that's settled! Please can anyone offer me
any help as requested below that doesn't involve "you can't do it" as I
have been doing it

OK and yes I must agree that it could be the pen not the drive that will or
won't. It sure won't to the Pen but that may because at the time Vista was
written Pen's were not very bid on capacity, now of course they are.

OK Richard. If you put Mount Hard Drives in the Help and Support search box
you will get a read out about mounting drives. It may need this carried out.

however that is not the
problem - I can't get as far as designating a disc to back-up onto.
First I need to be able to click on "Change Settings" which I can't do
without generating the error as detailed in my post

I must confess I do not know if this would work in Vista but I have used
Goodsync in XP. It free. Go take a look.

Ian - I can confirm that Goodsync works - I have used it in Vista for
some time - but I would like to get the native backup working correctly
as detailed in my original post.
