Unable to hear voice thru speakers when using microphone

I had bought a new DELL XPS 410 system. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Now here I am getting a bit problem with the audio output. I cannot here any audio through speakers. I had connected a mic to the laptop and when I speak there is no audio in the speakers. I need help here for the same. I tried many things here. I also changed the ports also but still the problem lies the same. I hope this is not a hardware fault here. This is my new system.

There can be two problem behind the issue. The first is that your mic can be faulty. The second is the volume of audio input. You can go in the sound settings inside Control Panel and there manage the volume of input devices. Just check whether a input device is listed there or not. You can try to test your mic in other system also. By default the volume is on a standard level in recording. Just try to check the audio input settings and then test back. I think that will be more helpful.
