Headphones work, but built in speakers don't

Can anyone help me? When I plug my headphones into my computer they work
fine, but when I take them out, I have not sound from my computer speakers.
The volume control in the bottom corner says that no audio devices are
    installed. What's wrong?

    Hello jerod,

what kind of head phones are they are? Are they USB headphones or normal
    ones?
If they are normal ones with the normal headphone jack, do you plug it in to
    the
socket in the back where the speakers go? And if you do take out the
    headphones,
do you plug the speakers back in?

I found this problem appears when i shutdown my notebook with the headphones plugged in, but start up the notebook with them out, all you need to do to fix the problem is plug the headphones in for ten seconds, then unplug them while logged into vista.

You might have a sound app running in the background which doesn't re-
scan the status when it starts up again. Try looking for updates for
your audio drivers or audio control panel software, as it is likely
this bug will have been fixed in a later version.
