As far as I know this is a bug. I have the same problem, but I can select
files if opening Documents from the start-menu. But that only applies to that
folder, change folder and I cannot select multiple files anymore. Selecting
many files also works in open file dialogs.
Im finding that if Areo is enabled - I cannot select multiple files from the
explorer
It doesnt matter if i use the check boxes or use the Ctrl click settings - I
just cannot select mutiple files with Aero enabled.. revert back to a simpler
theme and all is well ...
i suspect a bug too ( using Vista ultimae , retail edition )

I have the EXACT same problem. It just started thursday. I cannot select any
more than 1 file at a time. Doesn't matter if I have aero running or not. It
does work in "Documents" until I navigate away, then I cannot multi-select
anything.
I use mulitiple select all the time. Any solutions?

I have these notes that I copied from a post in one of these newsgroups.
The "speaker" answering is someone from MS.
"Any update on the inability to select multiple items in explorer bug?
Is it officially a bug? I've got a collection of news links from users
who have posted with this problem if anyone wants it.
A: This is a known bug that we are currently investigating. A workaround
you can use if you get into this state is to delete the Bags and BagMRU
Keys. This will reset the per user view state for all folder views. This
key is located at HKCU\Software\Classes\Local
Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\
You need to delete everything under and including the BagMRU and Bags
keys in order to reset your viewstate."
I would make a System Restore point and/or back up the registry keys if
you try this.

SYMPTOMS
On a Windows Vista-based computer, you cannot use keyboard shortcuts
to select more than one item in Windows Explorer. For example, you
cannot use the CTRL+A keyboard shortcut to select all the items in a
Windows Explorer window. Also, you cannot select multiple items in a
Windows Explorer window by holding the SHIFT key or the CTRL key while
you click the items.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the Reset Folders command. To use the Reset
Folders command, follow these steps:
1. In the Windows Explorer window where this issue occurs, click
Organize, and then click Folder and Search Options.
2. On the View tab, click Reset Folders.

This fix does nothing on my Vista Machine. I still ahve no column headers,
and connot select multiple files either with ctrl-a or by draggin a box
around multiple files. The ability to drag a box is gone.
Jim Robinson
Right click on the headers column bar, and select More...there are dozens and
dozens of column headers to choose from
--
Also, it IS possible to click and drag a (blue) box to select multiple files.
You're not trying very hard, are you?
What i am telling you is that i do not have these options.
I cannot right click on 'more' at the top of the right window because there
is no column header 'more' or any other headers for that matter.
As for dragging and selecting multiple files, this 'feature' is gone as well.
I canot select multiple by dragging a box around anything except on my
desktop.
It does not work within explorer.
Ctrl-A to select all, or ctrl-click to select multiple is also not an
option, as either option does nothing.
Jim Robinson
Well, all these options you are bitching about, I DO have.
YOU must be doing something wrong.
Sorry.
Well if you had read the entire post or the dozens other posts on this issue,
you would see that theres hundreds of other people having this same problem.
i highly doubt 'im doing something wrong'.
This is a bug in Vista, maybe only the x64 version, but nevertheless a bug.
Thanks for the try. Maybe one day an actual Microsft rep will try to explain
this one away, or FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PRODUCE A PATCH for the droves of
current Vista 'beta' testers who still seem to be doing beta testing 6 months
after release.

What exactly did you do to select multiple files in XP?
Seems to me you need to learn a different way. Click the first file, hold
the shift key down and click the last file, all are selected in between.
That is the way for XP and Vista.

If you are displaying icons, then you can click and drag a window around the
files to select them.
If you are displaying details, you can click & use Shift or Ctrl to select.
Or, you can drag a window, but you have to click on a blank space, behind
the file name (or other field), but not on any text. Clicking on the text
will move the file.
I think you guys are missing the point of my posts.
I am not some idiot user who doesnt know how to select files.
I am telling you all that there is a bug in Vista x64 where you CANNOT
select multiple files.
Ctrl-A doesnt work
Shift click doesnt work
Ctrl click doesnt work
If you try to select any 'whitespace' it selects the entire line, but only
one line.
If you try to drag a box, it moves the file you grabbed where you started
trying to drag a box.
If you try to go to the 'edit' pull down menu and choose 'select all', its
not there.
As far as sorting, i still have no column headers in most of my explorer
windows.
I tried the script that Microsoft posted which was supposed to fix the issue
but it only worked on a few of my folders. And the ones that worked for a
min, dont work anymore.

For Example my c:\windows folder shows all files and subdirectories as 'star
rated media files.
You cannot select multiple, there are no column headers, etc...
The root of my c:\ drive is the same way except i CAN select multiple files
in this folder only, however i have no column headers and cannot sort by
clicking 'size, type, date modified, etc..' Those "headers" are gone.
MS can we expect a patch for this ??????
