NVIDIA Graphics Drivers + Vista = BSOD?

    Hi All,

Having read alot of threads on this forum it has come to my attention that
many of those people reporting blue screen of death (BSOD) crashes on Vista
have an Nvidia graphics card (most likely with Nvidia Drivers installed)...

I am experiencing this problem on my laptop whenever I attempt to run a
program that uses any (even slightly) graphics intensive task (such as
Microsoft Hold'em game, Media Center, playing a Media Player, trying to run
    Windows System Assesment Tool etc..).

So I am putting it out there; Are people experiencing these problems while
running a graphics card other than Nvidia??

I'm not using a graphics card other than Nvidia but I don't have any
problems with the drivers installed by Vista on my 7600 GS.

I have a geforce 7600 gt and currently running windows vista home premium. I
have attempted to install the new 97.46 and the 100.something drivers for
vista 32 bit, but when it
starts the install it comes up with an error saying:

"Setup detected that the operating system in use is not Windows Vista. This
setup program and its associated driver are designed to run only on Windows
Vista. The installation will be terminated."

How can I install the new drivers?

    me too!!

I am too! Glad it's not just me, but it's really annoying. I'm using a general NVIDIA 7600GT and I get blue screens on most generic intensive tasks, as well. Anyone know of a fix to this yet????

    SUj--

I'm using one and it's overclocked, with no problems. Call Tech Support
for whomever made the video card--that's not Nvidia who as you know made the
chipset--ask them which current driver is doing the best among games and
graphics apps. They are knowledgable and usually open all the time.

    BTW--

You really skimped on information. The key is what driver are you using.
In my experience several people are having no trouble at all using the
generic driver that MSFT supplies on the Vista DVD that was given to them
from Nvidia. Unless you have a specific graphics app or game that requires
more functionality, it should be working fine.

Also, with all due respect, I don't see any evidence yet that your BSODs
have anything to do with your Nvidia 7600.

    You wrote:

"and I get blue screens on most generic intensive tasks" With what evidence
are you linking them to your video card?

    What are the errors?

Why not do a Startup Repair? You don't have to be in a no boot situation to
    profit from it.

    *Repair:

SFC: Windows Key +R>type in cmd>hold down CTRL+SHIFT on your keyboard and
then press Enter>type sfc /scannow at prompt.

A Stop error occurs, or the computer stops responding when you try to start
    Windows Vista

You run the startup repair tool this way:

Note The computer must be configured to start from a CD or from a DVD. For
information about how to configure the computer to start from a CD or from a
DVD, see the information that came with the computer.
    2. Restart the computer. To do this, click Start, click the arrow next to
the Lock button, and then click Restart.

This usually means that you enter bios setup by whatever key or keys
(sometimes there is more than one key that will do it for your model--go to
pc manufacturer site) and configure CD to be first in the boot order.

    See for ref:
    Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS
    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

Note If you cannot restart the computer by using this method, use the power
button to turn off the computer. Then, turn the computer back on.
    3. Set your language preference, and then click Next.

Note In most cases, the startup repair process starts automatically, and you
do not have the option to select it in the System Recovery Options menu.
    4. Click Repair your computer.
    5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system
that you want to repair, and then click Next.
    6. In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair to start the
    repair process.
    7. When the repair process is complete, click Finish.

    3) Select your OS for repair.

    4) Its been my experience that you can see some causes of the crash from
    theWin RE feature:

You'll have a choice there of using:

    1) Startup Repair
    2) System Restore
    3) Complete PC Restore

    You could also:

Try to F8 to the Windows Adv Options Menu>try 3 safe modes there (I don't
use WGA) and Last Known Good>then I go to Win RE in Vista. That gives you a
choice of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command
    Prompt.

    These methods are outlined in

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP/and Vista
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/

    You will need this reference:

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449/en-us

The command to use for system restore at the safe mode cmd prompt is:

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

The reason for doing this is one of these choices may work, when the other
doesn't. My experience is that people do not fully try F8 when they think
or have said they have. It is that they can almost always reach Windows
    Advanced Options though.

    Good luck,

    CH

RE: NVIDIA Graphics Drivers + Vista = BSOD?

    Hello all!

Yes I have had several crashes with my 7900 gtx card but I cannot say it is
just from the driver for the card. I did an upgrade from a clean xp install
to WV Premium Home Edetion. As I build my own systems I can rule out any OEM
issues. My Box is new based off of all Vista ready items; AMD 64 X2 3800 dual
    Core, 2 gig DDR2 RAM, I updated my MB driver that runs a nvidia chip also;
asus m2n32-sli delux, and a saw a great improvement. I will be updateing the
vid card driver this weekend, I am not sure what I am running currently. I
have been getting lockups and crashes to BSOD with memory dump, even in safe
mode, that seem ot be related to an COM issue and a memory issue. I ran a
diag. on my ram and HD and did a defrag with no help. I tryed to uninstall a
couple of programs in safe mode to see if it would help any but I got a
message the windows installer was not working and had to be reinstalled.
I have reinstalled Vista once already. I get App_Filter Module sotpped
working, Security Stopped working and COM stopped working most often. I saw
this slow down in frequency with doing disk cleanup often in increaseing the
available memory to 5 gig. Oddly my C: dirve seem to grow after each crash.
I'll update here with anything else I find.

    BSOD only on nVidia driver

    HP Pavilion Laptop dv8333cl
Vista Home Premium/XP MCE dual boot
    1.5 GB RAM
    nVidia 7600 Go 256MB
    Centrino Dual Core 1.83
    Dual 100GB HD

I installed Vista Home Premium just over a week ago. The display driver installed was the generic Microsoft nVidia 7600 Go, not the actual driver set nVidia issued. I had no problems at all. Media center was good, video & DVD playback was smooth, going to dual monitor mode was also fine. However, today I noticed that it was running off the generic driver so I visited nVidia's website and HPs website and got the latest 'Vista compatible' driver. All looked good until I attempted to go into dual monitor mode: immediate BSOD. Also, it fell into BSOD when I tried to update my Windows Experience Score (4.4 BTW). I reverted back to the generic Microsoft 7600 Go driver and my laptop is happy again. So for all of you who may need a usable driver, I suggest checking Microsoft.

    Driver Version
    7.15.10.9746
    dvlddmkm.sys
    nvapi.dll
    dvd3dum.dll

    I hope this helps.

RE: NVIDIA Graphics Drivers + Vista = BSOD?

I got the blue screen of death when I install the nVidia drivers directly
from the Vista update thing. My computer was completely unrecoverable after
that. So don't even think about install the recommended nVidia drivers
directly from the Windows Update program. Just download the nVidia drivers
directly from the nVidia website. They work alright and no BSOD.

I have a 7600GS btw. And the BSOD happened as recently as a month ago so
it's a persistent problem it would seem.

What version of the nVidia drivers are you running? If they are the latest,
did it do it prior to the update? If it wasn't, roll back to the previous
drivers. Current GeForce drivers are 169.25.

RE: NVIDIA Graphics Drivers + Vista = BSOD?

My new computer, listed below, came with the NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS and I find
my system taking very long to load any kind of graphics. The driver is dated
    12/11/07 version 7.15.11.6925.
I expected my system with 3GB of mem to behave better than I receive.
My installation of Vista SP1 for my Home Premium edition did not change the
speed. Other than the graphic issue, other applications or minimal graphic
    sites are fast.
I contacted HP Support and NVIDIA to find out if the 8400GS was the cause
and if a better card would improve the speed. None of them seem to agree, but
I do not get a "solution".

    Hi Davior1414,

Indeed, I'm having a nightmare with an HP computer with an nVidia video
adapter and Windows Vista Business. It dies with a blue screen with an error
code of 0xC5, which means that a device driver corrupted the system's memory
    pool.

I have no evidence what so ever that the guilty one is the nVidia
driver. I have no evidence that would clear it from all guilt, though.

    Only time will tell...
