802.11g Wireless Networked HP Photosmart C7180 Issues

I upgraded to Microsoft Vista (Ultimate if it matters) Tuesday night. When I
attempted to install the HP Vista driver for this all-in-one device, the
install program appears to run correctly, files are showing as being
extracted via the animation, and after about 20 seconds or so I get a window
indicating that four device options have been installed and are ready to go.
But no printer or scanner discovery by Vista ever occurs, nor is there any
rudimentary device management software that installs with the HP package (the
latter may be normal - HP states that this is a "basic" driver package on
their website). I am able to install the printer using the "add a printer"
function (uses the Vista drivers I assume), but I have been unable to add the
scanner to-date.

The printer/scanner/fax is definitely connected to the network (I can get to
it via IE at it's IP address). For some reason Vista isn't discovering it. Is
this a Vista issue, a driver issue, or is it possible my network
configuration is somehow preventing Vista from discovering it??

REALLY appreciate any ideas or suggestions...

HP does not yet support network scan in Vista. They are working on this.

Thanks very much for the quick reply Alan! I can understand the network
scanning limitation, and acknowledge HP states the driver they currently have

I think you'd have to admit that step 3 is a bit misleading, and implies
operation - albeit limited - over a wireless network for both printing and
scanning. Oh well, I'll wait on the fully functional driver package.

But is there a reason that Vista is not discovering my printer over the
network? I can add my printer using Vista (and the "canned" drivers that come
with Vista) but shouldn't it automatically discover the printer and install
the HP driver? Otherwise I don't see the need for the minimal driver on their
website.

Is the printer and the machine on the same subnet? Can you ping the printer
from the machine?

Yes. On my home network, my PC resides at 192.168.1.2, and my HP Photosmart
C7180 resides at 192.168.1.3. I have been able to verify that the printer is
connected to the network wirelessly, and further I have been able to connect
to the printer through its web-based interface and verify scan capability.

I assume your home network is on a workgroup rather than a domain.

When you run the Add Printer wizard, we will go and query all the addresses
on the subnet to determine if the device is a printer. What is the subnet
configured on Vista and on the printer? I don't think you could get to the
remote device if they are not on the same subnet but I just want to make
sure.

If you set the printer up as a Local Printer and add a Standard TCP/IP
targeting the 192.168.1.3, will the port be added? If the device responds
correctly to SNMP, it can tell us what driver to install. Most HP devices
support this protocol but not all.

Did you already tried by going directlty to an application like Office and
scan directly from there.

When using the basic driver you will not have any scanner application, and
you scan directly from an application.

As you already mentioned that you are able to scan from the EWS [via IE]
then you should also be able to scan from an application over the network.

I only see one issue I had not checked on earlier, in Office 2007 there is
no way to do that as I just found out that the From Scanner or Camera option
in Office 2007 is not available, after I tried to look for it myself, found
the answer in Help:

"What happened to the From Scanner or Camera option for adding pictures to a
document?
The From Scanner or Camera option for adding pictures to a document is not
available in Microsoft Office Word 2007. Instead, you can add pictures from
your camera or scanner by downloading the pictures to your computer first
and then copying them from your computer into Word.

After you download a picture to your computer, do the following:

1.. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Picture. "
The difference between the "canned"driver in the OS and the HP driver, is
that the basic HP driver will give you Print/Scan, while with the
"canned"you will only be able to print.

So if you have an application like Office 2003 or any application where you
can use the From scanner or Camera, you should be able to scan.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my photosmart c7180 on vista
ultimate 32bit connected wirelessly to my gateway

I can see the printer in my web browser, but still the HP driver, which
is supposed to be a full version as stated at the hp site, 159MB
released on 03-2007, version 080.001.225.000 is unable to find the
printer during the installation, even if I manually enter the printer's
local IP address. I have also tried disabling any type of vista security
like the firewall, windows defender, user account control, my antivirus
and still the printer cannot be discovered.

a temporary solution could be to right click the control panel's
printer icon in windows explorer -> add printer -> add a network,
wireless or bluetooth printer -> then windows search and successfully
find the IP of the printer -> and the we have to manually add the model
of the printer by going to HP -> photosmart but C7180 is not included in
the photosmart printers. What I have done then is to add another
photosmart printer instead, (in my case photosmart 7200) and you are
set, every program prints to the printer. The problem is that 7200 is a
totally different model than the C7180 so that solution might be
dangerous and could damage the printer. but it works...

So I'm still waiting for a driver from HP
