| Windows Live Messenger and DEP
I've downloaded both WLM 8.0 and 8.1 and for some reason, everytime I try to sign on, Windows DEP will shut the program down. I've tried everything I can think of, even re-installing the flash like someone mentioned on here earlier to no avail. Anyone have any idea's? |

Start menu> right click "Computer", select Properties>to the left "Advanced system settings", "Settings" under Performance> Data Execution Prevention tab You can try two things here. First, try to add WLM to to the exception's list. The box should be empty, so WLM will be your first entry. Or, check the option "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" This will require a restart. |

Just curious to how you know that DEP is shutting it down? When it shutstuff down for me I get no message. Does it appear in the Event Log? I used to have the same problem with messenger, and I got a dialogshowing that DEP was going to shut it down. I'm now running the 8.1 WLM beta on Vista x64 and haven't had the problem for a while. I've tried that and it told me that it "cannot turn DEP off for this program" |

I have the same problem. Had my brand new Vista laptop for the past 5 hours, 4 hours of which have been spent trying to get WLM to work. Crashes as soon as you hit sign in, then says its a DEP error and must close. What are these monkeys at MS playing at sending out software thats not compatable with their own software!! How can they have possibly missed such a VITAL bug? I now have no way to communicate in real time. Well done MS. |

Try reading this on the BBC website .. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6312501.stm The first section goes on to explain that WLM isnt working, although that shot seems to give an error code which the rest of us arnt recieving. |

I have the same problem and I have tried both suggestions - didn't help. I have also reinstalled Flash and just turned off UAC - now it won't even try to launch, I don't even get a failure message. When I right click the WLM icon I don't have th eoption "open as administrator" (my account is the only account, and has administrator status). Help! |

I'm glad it worked. I would like to say that for future reference- don't be afraid to Google. I'm not trying to be rude, I know that it can be frustrating sorting through various search results. However, I found that link via Google in less than five minutes after reading your post. All I did was put "WLM DEP" into Google and the fifth result is what led me to the your answer, the second post from the bottom. http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/Sho...26028&SiteID=1 Have a good weekend, Linna. |

Trust me, I have googled for quite a while - in two languages. Just trying to find out what "dataexekveringsskydd" is in english (DEP) wasn't easy. If I hadn't googled I wouldn't have found the information that it could be Java, Flash, UAC and so on. There's no shortage of information of problems with messenger and Vista. |

OK... please stop following the posts above. 1) You don't want to run msngr as admin...BECAUSE it shouldn't need admin!!! 2) You don't want to turn off DEP...BECAUSE it is there for your PROTECTION!!! And then you complain: Windows is not secure!!! The purpose of Vista's secutiry features is lost if you start running everything as admin. You shouldn't even be using an admin account on a daily basis if you simply surf the web or work with documents. Wait for a proper solution from MSFT. Till then, use an older version or the web version. Cheers! |
