Star Wars Empire at War - DirectX problem

I tried to install and run this game on Vista Home Premium 32bit and the
launcher tells me that insufficient DirectX is detected.

It wants to install d3dx9_27.dll in order to run. I've tried running it in
    compatibility mode but no luck.

I had the same problem in XP but just ran the DX installer to overcome it.

Should I do the same in Vista or do I run the risk of overwriting something
important in Vista's version of DirectX 9L?

    Thanks in advance

    Scott

Yes, go ahead and install it. Vista will take the bits it needs like some
    new DLLs.

You can install it. I don't think that Vista will overwrite the newer
files, but it will install what it needs. Let us know how it turns out!

Thanks to both of you for the replies. The installation drops a d3dx9_xx.dll
into the \windows\system32 folder and the installation for the expansion
drops a whole lot more in along with other stuff that I noticed the DX
    installer adding.

The main d3d dlls are still the Vista versions though, so nothing was
    overwritten.

Have you downloaded the directx9 runtimes? Vista came with Directx10 but was
missing some pieces of 9. You can download Directx9 at
    http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US...rectX10-a.aspx

If you click the "download the latest Directx" you will get the 9.0c
download page. Don't worry it will not downrev your system, just fill in any
    missing pieces.
