    Startup Repair won't work

    Computer: Gateway
    Processor: Intel

I know next to nothing about Vista. I am very experienced with XP
    etc.....

I have my bosses laptop and it fails to boot. The ensuing startup
repair fails and gives me this message:

    Event Name: StartupRepair V2
    Signature 01: AutoFailover
    Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386
    Signature 03: 6
    Signature 04: 786444
    Signature 05: CorruptVolume
    Signature 06: Bad Patch
    Signature 07: 0
    Signature 08: 3
    Signature 09: WrpRepair
    Signature 10: 2
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033

I've tried all the obvious things...can't system restore, can't get to
safe mode, can't use startup repair. The only avenue I haven't tried is
using the command line. Can anyone help me with this?

    you might want to
    search for faq's at
    the gateway homesite
    for that particular model.

    ---------

    also, you might gain
    some control by booting
with a cd since it seems
    that booting from the hd
    is now impossible.

    here are some places
    that provide the info on
    making such a cd:

    ----------

    my guess is that a
    chkdsk and defrag
    is required and should
    be initiated if you are
    able to boot vista again.

I was able to run Chkdsk, but it didn't fix the problem. I do have a
Vista disc, but it's not the one that came with this system. I currently
don't have any of the discs that go with this laptop.

Info above on how to make a Repair disk for Vista.

Most computers these days have a Recovery partition to reinstall Vista back
    to Factory standards.
Have a look at their Website, or a KEY option will be presented when you 1st
Power on to do a Recovery.
Going that way, loses all Data and installed Programs.

    you might try reviewing
    the gateway homesite
    for answers.

    if the machine came
    preinstalled with vista,
    then they may have
    some additional info
    or tech support.

    perhaps, it is simply
    an issue involving
    faulty hardware or
    device drivers.
