Please help! Can't read my XP burned CD-Rs in Vista

I burned a CD-R (photos) on my old XP Desktop and tried to open it in
Vista on my HP laptop. No dice. In "My Computer" it showed a folder
    with nothing in it!

When I burned it on my desktop I did the quick format, added the files
and then Finalized the disk. I even tried it on my daughters laptop
(Toshiba) which is running Vista. No dice.

    Please help. And thank you.

Most likely it's that the CD drive on the XP machine is out of spec.
Things that can help are a different (higher quality :-) brand of blanks,
and slowing the writer to less than half maximum speed.

Can you open the disk in Windows Explorer and access the files on the
computer on which you burned it?

Vista uses Mount Rainier packet writing, and XP did not have this.

I have never used XP's or Vista's built-in disc writing, so I cannot be
certain what the problem is. I have only used Nero, since 1999.

Try using IsoBuster. It can read a lot of formats and also extract data
    from damaged discs.

www.isobuster.com (just use the free functionality)

Next time, unless I am wrong about XP not being able to read Vista's Mount
Rainier format, use a standard ISO format for your data discs, if you want
to use them on any OS. I recommend Nero, although it has become very
bloated over the last three or four years.

Unless the cd burner in your XP machine is defective...
it looks like not only did you burn it incorrectly...you software allowed
    you do to something that
    should not have been possible.

First you mentioned that you used CD-R media...
then you mentioned that you quick-formated it and added files.

Just burn the files directly to the cd without attempting to format it first

"Can you open the disk in Windows Explorer and access the files on

Haven't tried - I will try tonight when I get home.

"Just burn the files directly to the cd without attempting to format
    it first"
I tried that but my XP computer forces me to format the CD-R first.
They are older disks so I tried a new DVD and the same thing happened.

"Most likely it's that the CD drive on the XP machine is out of spec.

Thanks Wharf Rat, as an old Dead Head I appreciate your help, I did
try some newer DVDs, same thing.

Also, I have an old CD-R that someone made mewith some pictures on
it. Ran fine on the XP but not at all on either Vista.

I will report back tonight/tomorrow on my progress. Thanks for the
    help everyone.

Hello - new to the forum so sorry if I'm breaking any protocols by crashing in on this thread

I have a new PC running Vista and burned a DVD+R with some files I want to transfer across. The Bluray drive reads the DVD to an extent (

(also new at knowing which buttons not to press, obviously)

Anyway, the bluray drive can read the title I gave the DVD+R but reuses to show any of the files that were burned on it. They are there when read on a different drive however.

I had a similar problem trying to use an old Maxor one touch 120Gb external drive: the Vista PC wouldn't read it at all. I'm not sure if it's a Vista issue or a hardware issue!

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Its best to start a new thread with a brief description of the problem in
the title. You are more likely to get a volunteer tech replying to you that
way. Your forum leeches (not the best word) off the microsoft communities so
although you are posting there it is seen here and gets a wide audience.
