Screen Flicker when opening or closing windows

I get a very annoying screen flicker occasionally whenever a window is
minimized, closed or opened. It's most easily reproducible when the Sidebar
gadget selector is invoked or dismissed, and causes the whole screen
(including the taskbar) to flicker momentarily.

Anyone else seeing this?

I'm not, but I wonder if your Video card has settings that you can modify by
right clicking the desktop>Personalize>Display Settings. You also might be
able to use the Acceleration level by pushing the setting all the way to the
right in the area of display settings.

This would be at Right Click desktop>Personalize>Display Settings>Advanced
Button>Troubleshoot tab.

You also may have a choice of screen refresh rate, and you should select (if
there is a choice) the most optimal refresh rate your chipset or card maker
advises.

Don't forget whoever made your card, for example BFG with NVidia chipset,
has very high quality tech support (unusual I know) so you could lean on
them.

The settings here are dependent on your video card and the particular driver
you choose for it.

The card is a Geforce 7900 GS.
I had recently installed the latest driver from Dell. I tried rolling back
to the MS driver and it actually seems to be better so far.

I'll check the settings, but since the effect only happens intermittently
I'm not sure how it could be a configuration issue (short of actually
disabling features to ensure that the window animation effects are not
triggered -- which I obviously don't want to do).

Boy, you know why the MSFT driver would be better is a bit of a puzzle.
But I think one reason could be that MSFT gets their drivers from the
chipset maker (NVidia, ATI, or others), and it may bet hat they don't have
the best driver out from their site yet. In an ideal world, they would give
MSFT the driver that has the most functionality the second they release it.

Sometimes, though, you have a choice of drivers on the Nvidia or other
sites, and I recommend calling the card maker's Tech Support line because
those people are tracking the performance of the new drivers including the
Beta drivers in a variety of settings including different games and graphics
apps. They can tell you which of the drivers is working best if you have a
choice.

Obviously as time goes by, this variability will go away as more capable
stable drivers get released. Do check though the area of

Right Click desktop>Personalize>Display Settings>Advanced
Button>Troubleshoot tab.

Particularly look at acceleration, screen refresh rate and any settings your
nice new powerful card has on that Troubleshoot or another tab.

Thanks for the info.

It turns out that the Troubleshoot tab says "Your current display driver
does not allow changes to be made to hardware acceleration settings", and the
"Change Settings" button is disabled. I don't remember if these settings were
accessible with the Dell driver. There are two choices for the refresh rate
(59 or 60Hz). 50Hz is selected.

The driver identifies as "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS (Microsoft Corporation -
WDDM)". I think the Dell drivers identified just as "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900
GS".

It's been working pretty well since I reverted, and I haven't seen any
flicker, so I'm going to stick with the MS driver until something changes.

Which driver are you using? I haven't seen this happen again since I switched
back from the Dell driver to the Microsoft standard driver.

I have the same thing. 6600 Ultra SLI, The new nVidia 100.. Drivers.

They aren't helping themselves with the slow development of these drivers.
Vista has been out since 11/30/2006.

Yes but my screen flicker is occuring every few seconds regardless of what i do. It happens during games or any program i am trying to run. I contacted microsoft and their supposed to have a tech call me in a day.

Do you have the latest Vista supported graphic drivers installed? Also try
using Aero Basic. If this doesn't work, try double checking if you have Full
Hardware Acceleration enabled (or select No hardware acceleration). Also try
changing the refresh rate for your monitor.

If all still fails, please try running in safe mode and see if it flickers.

Okay, I've tried all the nVidia drivers I could find. Microsoft WHQL, Dell
posted, and even the Laptop2Go drivers. 97 and 100 series.

One interesting find is when I lower my screen resolution it no longer
flickers on min/maximize. My native display is 1920 x 1200.

In addition to what Jabez gave you, we don't know what video driver you are
using\or your card, and you may have a choice of them for your card. Tech
support or forums from your chipset or card maker can tell you if there is a
driver choice which work best.

Yeah, mine does that too. Actually, my taskbar decays and icons disappear after I come back from the screen saver, or sleep. I have to reboot to get everything back, and that restart has to be via the task manager, because the windows button only produces a shadow and no icons. HELP!
