| Windows Explorer Crashes
I just upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate. Whenever I click on the Computer icon on the desktop (My Computer), Windows Explorer (Not IE) crashes, stops working, and has to restart. Any ideas on this issue? Thanks. |

| Re: Windows Explorer Crashes
If this is the way that Windows Explorer's shell has belaved from the moment you setup Vista, I'd do a Startup Repair. Startup Repair can fix your Explorer and it does not require you to be in a no boot Vista situation to get its benefits: ***STARTUP REPAIR IN WINDOWS VISTA*** 1) You run the startup repair tool this way: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925810/en-us How To Run Startup Repair In Vista Ultimate (Multiple Screenshots) http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm Note The computer must be configured to start from a CD or from a DVD. For information about how to configure the computer to start from a CD or from a DVD, see the information that came with the computer. 2) Restart the computer. To do this, click Start, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart. This usually means that you enter bios setup by whatever key or keys (sometimes there is more than one key that will do it for your model--go to pc manufacturer site) and configure CD to be first in the boot order. See for ref: Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm Note If you cannot restart the computer by using this method, use the power button to turn off the computer. Then, turn the computer back on. 3) Set your language preference, and then click Next. Note In most cases, the startup repair process starts automatically, and you do not have the option to select it in the System Recovery Options menu. 4) Click Repair your computer. 5) In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next. 6) In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair to start the repair process. 7) When the repair process is complete, click Finish. Additional References for Startup Repair With Screenshots: How to Use Startup Repair: ***Accessing Windows RE (Repair Environment):*** 1) Insert Media into PC (the DVD you burned) 2) ***You will see on the Vista logo setup screen after lang. options in the lower left corner, a link called "System Recovery Options."*** Screenshot: System Recovery Options (Lower Left Link) http://blogs.itecn.net/photos/liuhui...4/500x375.aspx Screenshot: (Click first option "Startup Repair" http://www.leedesmond.com/images/img...SysRecOpt2.bmp How To Run Startup Repair In Vista Ultimate (Multiple Screenshots) http://www.windowsvista.windowsreins...rtup/index.htm 3) Select your OS for repair. 4) Its been my experience that you can see some causes of the crash from theWin RE feature: You'll have a choice there of using: 1) Startup Repair 2) System Restore 3) Complete PC Restore Good luck, CH "Roger" <Roger@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5AD05541-61F0-4B9A-B93D-E4BED2F18439@microsoft.com... >I just upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate. In addition, you could try using SFC: Right click command on start menu>run as admin>type at command prompt: sfc /scannow Good luck, CH "Roger" <Roger@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5AD05541-61F0-4B9A-B93D-E4BED2F18439@microsoft.com... >I just upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate. Thanks for the help! I tried both of your methods, but neither one fixed the problem. Vista starts OK and everything runs great -- except that explorer crashes when I try to view a drive or files on my computer via Computer. Roger-- I saw infrequent but troublesome explorer (windows explorer) crashes in several of the Beta builds, but have not seen it much in the last 3 builds including RTM. I wish I had an alternative solution. Make sure that 1) You try to use Startup Repair again from that Recovery link accessed via the DVD 2) Try system restore from the recovery link as well since sometimes that will work if there is a restore point to before this happened, but from what you wrote I suspect it was always happening. Roger, Will you share "exactly" how you performed initial Vista Install, other than upgrade from XP? Question, before you first inserted Vista's Install DVD, did you have *all* devices connected to your machine, including (wishfully) broadband? If you did not have all devices and Net connection, before Vista Install, easily that could be the source for the conflict. If so, the only resolution, reformat... be sure for including (the first vol) at least a minium 1.5 Gig partition for BitLocker. -- Life is Wonderful while using Vista solo ! I want to play a game. Would you like to play? You seem loathe to answer, so I will make it easy for you. With your next post, you will automatically be answering in the affirmative by your mere act of posting--under any or all name(s) that you choose. I know who you are and how to find you. And you will be automatically accepting any and all rules, terms, and conditions of the game. Even the rules that have not been conceived yet. -- Maxwell Jigsaw Bluemeanie "Vista Ready" <VistaReady@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:B479B294-D532-4DA0-BF76-023F47199B9D@microsoft.com... <SOS snipped> |

I'm running Build 5840 and using the disk I received when I attended the Vista Launch Event. All devices and the internet were connected when I installed it. Initially Explorer worked, but then it began crashing every time.......... They gave out Vista 5840 at the Launch? Strange if so. I thought they were giving out Groove and Office 2007 Pro. | Windows Visa Crashing
I ran XP Professional on my system without a hitch. As soon as I installed Vista, the system started locking up every 5 to 10 minutes. I would be working on things and it would just suddenly stop working. You would have to reboot the system to get back in. I finally got fed up and went back to XP Professional. It was definitely a waste of my money buying the operating system. EggHeadCafe.com - .NET Developer Portal of Choice http://www.eggheadcafe.com |

OK -- but what sort of configuration are you running XP Pro on? What motivated you to look at Vista? -- Barry Schnur |

| Re: Windows Visa Crashing
I agree. I have a relatively new PC with 1gb RAM, and nothing seemed to work in Vista. Reboot time jumped up to approximately 4:30 to reboot. XP was half that. I had to Uninstall a whole lot of software before the Vista Upgrade would even run. How ridiculous is that? Its all Windows Software! I figure when they force this crap on me, is when I buy a Mac! Hey Guys, I came here when I was looking for help for my explorer crashing. I finally resolved the issue. You're might not be the same as mine, but my explorer would crash everytime I would enter a directory with videos. If any of you have this problem, it is likely video codecs you installed, as crazy as that seems. I removed my codecs, and installed Vista friendly ones and the problem is now gone. Just thought I'd help some people out. EggHeadCafe.com - .NET Developer Portal of Choice http://www.eggheadcafe.com |
