Thread: WebDav question

    WebDav question

I've tried connecting to our WebDAV server as I had in XP through adding a
network place, but after I enter the URL I get an error that states "the
folder you entered is invalid." If I map the drive either on the commandline
or through the GUI it works. Is this how WebDAV is connected now?
    Thanks,
    Jeremy Dennis

    RE: WebDav question

    Hi Jeremy,
"Add a Network Place" should work for WebDAV resources as well. Are you
entering the resource using the http:// name or the UNC (prefixed with \\)
    name?
Also, are you running a pre-RTM version of Vista? There was an issue with
"add a network place" wizard in RC2 that we fixed in RTM.

    thanks

    RE: WebDav question

    Hi Ather,

Thanks for your response but we continue to have WebDAV problems here at a
major university which uses https secured WebDAV in combination with an
eLearning tool We are using the RTM version of Vista with no success in
    accessing the resource.

The WebDAV resource was able to be successfully added as a Web Folder
utilizing machines with Win XP and IE6 all recent patches. No changes to the
testing resource user name or password has occurred. All attempts to add
WebDAV functionality have failedwithin Vista. We have tried the following:

-Method 1: Accessing the WebDAV resource within IE. Result: Unsuccessful.
IE attempts to authenticate and then displays this error message: "Internet
Explorer could not open <https://...> as a web Folder. Would you like to see
its default view instead?". Clicking yes to this question renders a page
that only displays the root folder of the resource as an HTML document.

-Method 2: Add the WebDAV resource from within the "Add Network Location"
wizard. Result: Unsuccessful. No prompt to authenticate and response
displayed was the following error message: The folder you entered does not
appear to be valid. Please choose another"

-Method 3: Add the WebDAV resource using a Privileged Command Prompt and
the "net use" command. Result: Unsuccessful. Attempts to authenticate then
displays this error message: "System Error 5: Access is denied".
Infrequently will respond with the error message: "System Error 67 has
occured: The netowrk name cannot be found".

So far we have had no luck. Can you advise as to how we should proceed?

    Thanks!
    Mark

RE: WebDav question - Follow-Up to Previous Query

    Hi Ather,

After writing my previous post I read additional posts and now understand
that the root of the problem seems to be the lack of the inclusion of the
    WebFolders client within Vista.

The WebDAV redirector client would not be compatible with the design of the
site in question as particular users may not be able to be given access to
the root of the site. Since this is the case, is there a way to install the
    WebFolders client in Vista?

Please feel free to clarify if you feel that this summation is inaccurate.

    Thanks!
    Mark

RE: WebDav question - Follow-Up to Previous Query

Yes - if the OPTIONS request to the root of the site doesn't succeed or
returns but doesn't say that the server can talk DAV (Basically support verbs
like PROPFIND, PROPPATCH etc), WebDAV redirector will not be able to connect
    to such a server.

An option/workaround is to actually have the root of the site support
    OPTIONS request.

WebFolders gets installed on Vista if Office System 2003 is installed on
Vista. Besides that, there is no way of installing WebFolders on Vista.

Thanks & I apologize for the inconvenience.

RE: WebDav question - Follow-Up to Previous Query

    Hi Ather,

Thanks for the additional information. As a follow-up I tried installing
the Webfldrs.msi client from Office 2003 but still no luck. I placed the
client in c:\windows\system32 and followed the install routine as indicated
but I am still not able to connect through any of the methods previously
mentioned (IE7, Add Network Location, or "net use").

Are there additional steps that I need tto perform in order to ensure that
the Web Folders client works correctly?

    Thanks!

    Hi Mark,

I am curious about the IE error. On Vista, IE should not ask you about
opening something as a webfolder as it does come with Vista by default.

Could you double check that you can open the site using IE with Vista? If
that is the case, then we should in most cases support it using webclient.

    Thanks

RE: WebDav question - Follow-Up to Previous Query

    Howdy Shivani!

The error I get when I try to open the WebDav site within IE states that
"Internet Explorer could not open <url> as a web Folder. Would you like to
    see its default view instead?"

Still no luck using this particular site with the WebDav redirector built
into Vista, although everything worked fine in XP. Do you know of anyway to
force the usage of WebFolders client that was provided by Office 2003 or any
other ideas on getting WebDav to work with Vista? From previous posts it
looks like changes were made to the way the WebDav redirector interacts and
    authenticates with the site.

This problem has the potential to affect over 20,000 students on our campus
who use the Sakai class communication tool.

    Thanks!
    Mark

Possible Solution to system error 67

-Method 3: Add the WebDAV resource using a Privileged Command Prompt and
the "net use" command. Result: Unsuccessful. Attempts to authenticate then
displays this error message: "System Error 5: Access is denied".
Infrequently will respond with the error message: "System Error 67 has
occured: The netowrk name cannot be found".

I had a similar error when trying to use a VM drive through MSSQL on a Win2003 server. I found a solution between the Microsoft solution and another webpage I found:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843156
    http://www.helpdesk.ugent.be/webhost...tand_mount.php

I found that you need to set the services like this:
    Services:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - Started
    Secondary Login - Started
    TCP/IP Netbios Helper - Started

This is also a hidden hardware device property that need to be disabled:
    Hardware:
IP Network Address Translator (NAT) - Disabled

    Hope this helps!

    Re: WebDav question

I also get the same error message as Mark even after I did a full
install of MS-Office 2003. WebFolders still does not work with Vista
as it once did on WinXP. NetDrive and other WebDAV clients don't work
    either.

I hope Microsoft provides a simple OS fix for this soon.

By simple, I mean an OS fix that does not require users to install
MS-Office 2003 or other unrelated software. Afterall, Microsoft ought
to prefer that we move to Office 2007, which some of us have and would
like to see deployed throughout our organization. We cannot have two
versions of Office installed on Vista to get WebFolders and WebDAV
clients to work again as they did on WinXP.
