Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

Greetings,

When trying to connect to a shared Brother Laser (HL-2040) from a Windows
Vista machine (upgraded from XP Pro) over a wireless network I get the
following error:-

"Windows cannot connect to the printer. The server print spooler service is
not running. Please restart the spooler on the server or restart the server
machine."

The printer is a USB Windows GDI device that works fine on both XP and Vista
as a local printer. Prior to the upgrade to Vista the machine could print to
the printer under XP.

Other shared files and folders work fine. Guest, Anonymous and Network all
have print rights. Firewalls both set to allow Microsoft File and Printer
Sharing. I have Googled and scanned these newsgroups and found others with
similar problems.

Has anyone found a solution yet?

RE: Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

Hi,

had a similar problem with the spooler service.
After I deleted and recreated the user profile for the affected users,
everything is working a-ok. It seems as if there are some information stored
within a migrated user profile which do not work that well with the new
spooler service.

cheers
Martin

you are doing better than me. I can't even get my brother mfc-420cn to
even install, i am the administrator(and only person onthis computer) and it
says i need my own permission to continue and then it won't let me give that
permission say i don't have proper authorization.....any ideas

It was happening for me too, now it's ok.

What I did was:

- Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Find "Print Spooler", right-click, Start.

After doing this try to install the network shared printer again.

For me worked well.

Re: Spooler Error - Windows cannot connect a shared printer on XP Pro.

This worked for me. I had a brand new ASUS N53JQ Laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and printers would olny work if I restarted the print spooler (the print spooler service was still running too) and this need to be done for each print job. I did a factory image restore and still no luck. Then I came across the soultion above. I created a new user, restarted the print spooler and then rebooted the laptop. Logged in as the new user and printing worked with no more problems. I then migrated the old user data to the new user and problem sorted.
