| Chess Titans - The Cheating Computer
So, I'm trying out the games in Vista (Priorities you know) and I'm playing Chess Titans. I'm doing really good too. Down to the Queen, a Rook and of crouse my King. The computer is down just it's King. I start narrowing in on the computers King and it get's to a point that it can't move, you know .. Checkmate and what does it do? A nice message box comes up and says the game is a draw. 8-| Better turn up the logic debuggin on that one. ;) |

Doug; If the king is not currently in check but any move will place the king in check, that is a draw. That is what he was saying, there are no "LEGAL" moves available. It is not legal to move your king into a checked position, it is only checkmate when he is in a position where he is in check and has no moves to get out of check. Maybe I am reading something wrong. He stated that "The computer is down just it's King. I start narrowing in on the computers King and it get's to a point that it can't move" To me that does not sound like he was the one that lost. To me, Doug was refering to the computer's King and not his. Doug also stated he had several pieces. Am I missing something else? Ok, DOug has a few pieces, the computer is down to his king....Doug "surrounds" him so that the king can not LEGALLY move into any of the spaces around him, that is if the king were to move into any of those spaces, it would be putting itself in check, an illegal move. At that point in the game, there are no more legal moves for the computer so the game is a draw. If the king were in check and could not make any moves, the king would be checkmated, and Doug would have won. I truly agree, but I didn't get the impression from Doug that his king was in a position that it couldn't move safely. He stated that he was moving in on the computer's king and the game decided to call it a draw instead of allowing Doug to put the computer's king in check mate. If this is the case, then Doug should file a bug report. Chess is a fun game, and I am very happy that it is in beta 2. I am hoping that it will remain when Vista goes on sale to the public. What I, and the original responder got from his post was that yes, Doug was attacking, and got to the stalemate I described...HE(Doug) felt that since he had caused the Computer into the situation where it could not move he should have been awarded a WIN, whereas we pointed out that he had not won, he had caused a DRAW. We believe that he misunderstands the rules of the game, and since he had a definate advantage when the game was ended felt he "Won" and called the computer a cheater when it told him that no, he had not won, but had rather drawn... It is called STALEMATE, not CHECKMATE. | Re: Chess Titans - The Cheating Computer
Actually, I did not mean stalemate. I would have said stalemate if I meant stalemate. It was checkmate as I said in my original post. I moved my queen into a spot and placed the computers king in check and instead of calling it a win, it called it a draw. I'm not like a chess guru or aything but I do understand the rules of Chess. Zack, "I" understand completely what you are saying, even if others cannot! You are right! Even though I was a bit puzzled myself when playing the game, after reading your explaination, I now understand completely! The opposing king may not place itself in check (as we all already know) and if said king has no other "FREE/LEGAL" places to move, (as is the case stated earlier) the game must end, in this case, it must "DRAW"! Cheers Zack, Lee-roy. |

| RE: Chess Titans - The Cheating Computer
I am just getting back into chess (after a 25 year abstinence). It seems that I recall that once your opponent gets down to a bare king, you have a certain number of moves to place him in checkmate otherwise the game ends in a draw. Am I recalling this correctly ? Does anyone know the number of moves which are allowed ? |

Draw by Repetition: If the same position occurs 3 times (not necessarily on consecutive moves) with the same player to move, either player may point this out and claim a draw Fifty-Move Rule: If either player makes 50 consecutive moves without moving a pawn or making a capture (irreversible moves), either player may claim a draw. |
