Hi. I am running the public beta of Vista, and when I try to use the windows update control panel I get the message Error(s) Found: Code 80244019. Does anybody know what this error code means? Has anybody seen it before? I´ve the same problem and found no solution to fix it. I tryed it many times an resolve always the same error code 80244019. Browsing trough the WWW is possible. We do not use any Proxy Server but we use WEBSence to control the WWW traffic. This happened to me on a Vista Home Premium HP Pavilion. It had been spyware infected. I ran HiJack and found entries that redirected DNS entries from what they should be to ones set by whatever hijacked the pc. I fixed those. After trying again, I got a slightly different error code that meant that the firewall was blocking the site ms uses to do the auto updates. I added those sites to the exceptions list under the security settings in IE and it worked after that. |

It means there is a problem contacting the server. Try again later. Thanks. I'll try it again from time to time to seek if it works. Is there anything I can check on my computer to see if the problem is at my end? The likely cause would be your network connection if its on your end, so make sure that Internet Explorer is not working in off line mode. did you try running a full system scan through windows defender?be sure to update the definitions. No, never did try that. I guess I'll try that next time since the problem is resolved now. Do you feel that Windows Defender is an effective anti-spyware tool? |

since I happen to be near-paranoid when it comes to installing anything ( or even saving non-executable files for that matter ) in my system,I have not yet come across any threats to my pc (Windows Vista Ultimate x86 with SP1) so that I can know whether windows defender is doing it's job properly. However, should you feel defender to be not upto-the-mark,I am sure little else probably beats windows live onecare, the comprehensive one-stop pc security and maintenance package.Use it to believe it.and no,it won't consume high resources. I've found the resolution myself. The problem was because of a Trojan called DNS-Changer. It was routing the DNS requests to the wrong sites. Strangely, none of my anti- spywares/ adwares/malwares could catch this. Finally I downloaded the s/w SuperAntispyware Pro and it could detect the Trojan. I could resolve the problem by removing the Trojan. Thanks for looking into the post anyway and your response. Check if the URL: update.microsoft.com is routing you to the correct site. If not then possibly it's because of the Trojan DNS-changer. It's extremely difficult to detect this Trojan. I tried to go to update.microsoft.com but don't get anywhere. Page not available. I bypassed my router with no change. I checked the ip site in the reg file everything looks ok. Could it a problem with IE? Where do I go to get IE 8 or something better? |

I had same problem as yours. Now i fix by myself. 1 “click” on control panel 2 “click” on network and sharing center icon. 3 “click” on left side under task “manage network connection” then a new window will come up. 4 right “click” on your network connections icon then click on properties. 5 scroll down “click” internet protocol version 4 and 6 (TCP/IPv6 and 4) 6 make sure you select (obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DSN server address automatically) then ok And it should work. Please let me know if it does and i will appreciated thanks |

I'm not so sure that it immediately means you have a virus. I have Symantec Endpoint Protection loaded on my Vista Business machine that's giving me this error, and the logs for the past several weeks don't indicate any kind of suspicious file in its scanns. I'm running Trend Micro Housecall just to verify, but I don't think it's going to find anything, either. Edit: Ok I was wondering how I got subscribed to this thread. Apparently my posted solution didn't work, at least not permanently, otherwise I wouldn't be having this problem again. |

| Re: Windows Update Error Code 80244019
One of the most common problems associated with Windows Vista Update Error 80244019 is the DNSChanger Trojan. You'll recognize this trojan by checking the DNS server assignments on the computer that does not update. Do this by following these steps. 1) In Windows Vista, click on the Windows orb 2) Click in the Search box and type CMD and press Enter 3) At the command prompt, type IPCONFIG /ALL and press Enter 4) You should be presented with the bunch of information, find the section for your Internet connection. It may be entitled Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection or something similar. 5) Find the DNS Server section and double-check the numbers. Usually the DNS is a local IP like 192.168.0.1 or it could be a statically assigned IP from your ISP. If the DNS numbers are remotely similar to the following IPs then you have the DNSChanger trojan. These IPs originate in Europe. 85.255.113.122 85.255.112.83 85.255.116.148 85.255.112.223 6) Type Exit at the command prompt to close it |

| Re: Windows Update Error Code 80244019
Hi, I followed the instructions in this thread, but kept getting re-infected. Here's what the problem turned out to be for me. The bad DNS entries had been written into my Linksys wireless router, and as a result as soon as my machine would connect to the internet, the bad DNS settings were back. If you have a Linksys router and you have not changed the router password from the default password ("admin") you probably have this problem. Log onto your router using the IP address that is in your instructions - it's probably http://192.168.1.1/. Login will be "admin" user ID with a password of "admin". Once you are in, go change your password first. Then go into the "settings" screen and scroll down to the bottom. There are three lines for "static DNS". Change all of the numbers in those lines (on the right side of the page) to "0" and then save the settings. Exit the router setup and then re-try windows update. If it doesn't work, run the Malware remover program one more time, and then you should be OK. I found this in an article - it's a trojan from Ukraine that searches for routers with the default password, and then installs it's own DNS to force you through their servers. The infection isn't really on the PC - it's on the router. |

| Re: Windows Update Error Code 80244019
I am getting the same error message (80244019) when I try to use Windows Update or Defender Update on my personal Vista (32bit) PC. I am using a Linksys WRT310N router and have found that I can run the update successfully when I bypass the router. As this is my own personal PC, I don't use SUS or Sensage. I have configured my router to do some port forwarding for the WoW Blizzard downloader and I have just updated my router's firmware to the latest version available from Linksys but I still get the error. I have also tried reinstalling the O/S using both the factory image and the restore discs sent by HP. Interestingly enough this problem started after I restored my PC using the factory image to resolve a problem with a registry cleaner program that had become stuck in a loop. I have checked my registry entries and I do not have the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate\AU] posted above by SM4K. The choices under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\ are as follows : \CurrentVersion \DriverSearching \IPSec \Network Connections \safer \System Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!! |
