Unable to communicate with WIA service!

How do I check to see if my WIA Service is turned off? Scanning was working perfectly until I " stupidly" let Vista "make my computer run faster"! Sorry I can't remember where the option "to make it faster" was located but that's what caused the problem I'm having now!

There was no Error number but when it popped up it said: Image Acquisition at the top then: Unable to communicate with WIA service. One possibility is that your WIA service has been turned off. You may be able to perform this task without it but if your device relies on WIA, close this window, restart the WIA service, and try the task again.

I have not been able to find the WIA service anywhere on my computer, to see if it is indeed turned off! I need help.
