HP7410 Portrait duplex always prints Head-to-foot

Vista installed the driver for my HP7410, but when I try to print portrait,
duplex it always comes out head-to-foot instead of head-to-head. I didn't
have this problem using the HP drivers in WindowsXP.

    HP VISTA "DUPLEX" printing problem

I have a HP 7310 which ran fine on Win XP. I upgraded to VISTA Premium and the duplex printing worked, but not properly. It prints in "FLIP" mode only and will not print in the "book" mode unless I set the printer to "Manual" duplex mode. I've had numerous conversations with HP and Microsoft support personnel and both claim the problem is not theirs. HP maintains that the problem is with Microsoft as HP printers that support "Automatic Duplex" printing work fine with WIN XP. About two months ago I spoke with a "Level Two" tech at HP and this person finally admitted that they were working on a driver fix, but had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA when the fix would be available.

I am told that Canon 850 printers with "DUPLEX" printing "built in" work fine, but have not as yet seen it work on an 850. Canon support personnel maintain that they have no duplex print problems.

I've been waiting for a driver fix for over four months and if there is no fix by the end of August, I'm going to ask HP to refund my purchase price and I'll buy a CANON 850 printer.

Re: HP7410 Portrait duplex always prints Head-to-foot

    Bob,

Thank you for this fix. I have applied it for my cp1700 print driver and
now the Tabloid and Super B page sizes are listed under the paper selection
drop downs (I didn't have to manually define them) and duplex is working.

Aftrer applying this fix, I became extremely frustrated in attempting to get
it to work in Word. Everything was printing about 10 magnitudes of size too
big. The problem was a result of my trying to print in draft mode.
Switching to normal mode fixed that problem.

Obviously, HP didn't put a lot of effort into preparing their print drivers
and their technical people do not seem to communicate with their email
support division. The email support division had me try various other print
drivers (for other printer models), none of which worked with the cp1700.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Which version of Word? Is it repeatable - if you go back to draft mode
    does the problem return?

Thanks much for your help with this seamless fix to a months long problem I had with my 7410 & Vista. How I wish that HP learns from you.

As promised, it has fixed my HP Officejet D duplex problems when using
    Vista. :D

I had no trouble following the simple instructions provided.

Re: HP7410 Portrait duplex always prints Head-to-foot

    Hi Bob,

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I was out of town the past four days.

The problem is with Word 2007 on Vista.

When I go to print properties, there is a drop down "What do you want to
do?" If I select "Two-Sided Duplex Printing", I have three options for Print
Quality: Draft, Fast Normal and Normal. The text prints okay under Normal,
but is blown away too large under Draft and Fast Normal.

If I select "General Everyday Printing", which does not let me do Duplex
printing, all four options for Print Quality: Draft, Fast Normal, Normal and
    Best, print okay.

Best is not available when I select "Two-Sided Duplex Printing," and yet I
can print best with duplex printing from XP.

Gawd I hate these new Vista Properties dialogs. The old XP dialogs were
    simple and straight forward!

Thanks for your assistance and interest in my problems, Bob.

HP Officejet d155xi and Vista Ultimate

    Many Many thanks Bob H
I was looking at putting XP on my new laptop, but it looks like I won't have to now.
The patch solved more than one problem.
    Duplex did not work.
I couldn't choose the paper tray.
It complained every time I tried 'Fast Draft'

    All seems to work now.

It's a shame that neither Microsoft Update or HP Support can provide this fix.

    Thanks Again
    Bob

    Bob,

Thanks for the patch for my HP7210 printer. Needless to say it works well. I have waited years for this patch! My initial correspondence with HP got me nowhere. I spent pounds on phone calls to HP support! I only stumbled across your patch by accident. I was looking for other HP 7310 printer problems at the time.

I was very glad to find that your email address was still valid. I will pass your details on to other IT colleagues.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Bob

Thank you for your immediate help. It worked perfectly as you have described!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I almost cracked up since I urgently have to print out a thesis!

I really wonder why one can find not a single word on this issue on the support site of Hewlett Packard and why the company doesn’t fix this bug that prevents thousands of people of using the duplex unit that they have bought from Hewlett Packard! I think this is really incredible!

Thanks goodness there are helpful people like you!

    Thanks again and kind regards

    Marc

Thanks for responding so rapidly to my emails for help on my HP7410 duplex printing problems on Vista. The patch you sent me, along with the detailed instructions, have worked perfectly.

It really is incredible that HP seem to have completely ignored this problem and I, like many others, have spent hours on the support line to them over the course of 2 YEARS (first call in March 07!!) and got absolutley nowhere.

Thanks! Even though I did not request directly from you, I read the forum then went back to the HP site, and still noticed that they have NO info regarding this problem. Started a support chat with them, eventually supplied a link with a zip file with a document dated in May 2009. This appears to be your document and patch. Again, thanks!! I wonder why HP won't fix their own problem....;-)
