| Vista Keeps Freezing/Not Responding I just recieved my new Dell with Vista 64-Bit Home Premium on Friday (the 8th) and since the initial start-up, I can be doing anything (web surfing, viewing task manager, any program) and without any warning the program just stops responding. In most cases I can't minimize or close the program and clicking Start - Restart even does not respond. The 'only' way to end this and restart the computer is by actually unplugging the power cable. Viweing the Event Viewer I see that within 2 days, I have 83 Error messages listed under Windows Logs - Applications (These are the red buttons under the LEVEL column). All updates are installed. I have to write this quickly before the bugger freezes up again. -- plls |

Faulty hardware. Call Dell and exercise your warranty. No new machine should act this way, but it's not uncommon for a new machine to have a bad part. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "plls" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message news:f73088c5e054723e49a67c00ac8bc121@nntp-gateway.com... > > I just recieved my new Dell with Vista 64-Bit Home Premium on Friday > (the 8th) and since the initial start-up, I can be doing anything (web > surfing, viewing task manager, any program) and without any warning the > program just stops responding. | Re: Vista Keeps Freezing/Not Responding
It seems that your computer is locked during that moment so it is not receiving any inputs from your keyboard. Is any software installed or activated during the 2 days? You can make sure the air flow in the box is good and perform a memory test to make sure it is working normally. You can check for virus. But the best bet is to call the tech support, they may have everything you need to diagnose your computer and you don't have to explain too much about what you have done to the computer. If you need more assistance, you can upload some of the event log and the dump file and I will take a look for you. The dump file with the extension .dmp is located in the windows folder. When you right click on each event log category on the left pane, you will see there is a shortcut menu item for you to save it to a file. | Re: Vista Keeps Freezing/Not Responding After a very long day of searching for possible problems and running virtually every test I could try I finally said 'F' it and did a system restore to the day I got the new pc (which was Friday the 8th). Any and all programs were eventually 'Not Responding' after just a few minutes of use. I did the system restore and left it alone for the night. This morning, I set everything up from scratch again (right from the original Welcome to Vista screens where you select your language and country and time zone and create a profile...etc). The only updates allowed have been the important/critical ones. I haven't even installed an anti-virus yet that Windows Security Alerts wants me to know. Here is one thing though....During the very first original set-up, one thing that appeared in the sys tray was a Java update. I let it do its thing BUT when it went to finish I got an error message box that said there was a SYNTAX Error. It took at least half a dozen attempts to finally close that error box because every time I clicked on the red X, it would just re-appear. Anyway, it eventually closed, but I wonder if that 'could' have been the culprit. The other thing I have not done is upgrade IE7 to IE8. On my previous XP machine, I did the upgrade and everything went to **** from that moment on. The XP pc was lagging like a bugger and I couldn't figure out what was the problem. Eventually, I uninstalled IE8 and it reverted back to IE7 and things were rainbows and pixie dust again. I did do the upgrade to IE8 on the original set-up on Vista back on Friday....this time I'm still on IE7 and nothing has stopped responding so far. I wonder if that Java update was the problem. I'm just happy so far that everything is still functioning......so far. -- plls |

| Re: Vista Keeps Freezing/Not Responding My problem(s) is/are solved. On Friday a Dell technician paid me a visit and replaced my hard drive. Since then, everything is running hunky-dory. No more programs that suddenly say "Not Responding". I'm a happy camper once again. For what it's worth, the hard drive they removed was a Seagate and the new one they put in was Hitachi/IBM. -- plls |
