| RE: receiving error message 0x800106ba for windows defender http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/931849 Above is the MS resolution to your problem. And you can not uninstall defender from your computer. It is part of the Vista OS; you can only turn it off. |

Karenrd, On the Window Defender message boards, there have been a couple discussions regarding this error. You may want to try some of the solutions mentioned there. I found it by going to Windows Defender and looking for the newgroup link. From there, the discussion is under General with a message named "Error message 800106ba". |

I tried the regcure, but you have to pay for it and I believe that this is a Windows Vista Problem that should be fix by Microsoft. However, try the following steps and do it yourself without paying for it. 1 Go to control Panel and click on Administrative tools. 2 Click on services and a new windows will appear. 3 Look up for windows defender and right click on it, click on properties and select automatic, it should be on manual, change it to automatic and click apply then o.k. and will take you back to the services windows. 4 Windows Defender should be highlighted and on the left hand side of the services windows, should be 2 links, click restart. 5 Close all windows and open Windows Defender, it should work without a problem and your popup window at start up will not be display any longer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931849 |

They have. They've discontinued it. And please quote the post you are replying to: The "forum" that you are posting in leaches off the Microsoft News servers in order to make it look far busier than it really is. Everyone who uses the MS News servers sees your post on it's own - we have NO IDEA to whom you are talking. This is not your fault - the fault lies with the forum owners who do not explain to members that their posts end up on global Usenet newsgroups. If you MUST continue to post in this "forum" then please at least quote the post you are replying to, and do NOT change the subject line. You would be far better off however, using a news reader and subscribing to these news groups direct. | Solution Steps for Windows XP
Re: receiving error message 0x800106ba for windows defender I'm running Windows XP, 3rd edition I was having some problems with my previous anti-virus program just slowing everything down excessively. It was recommended that I just get rid of them and install Security Essentials. I did so and things seemed to be alright at first. But now if I turn my laptop off rather than just standby, when I turn it back on the Security Essentials is noted as OFF (not protected). When I hit the START botton to restart it, it seems to take forever to restart. And now I get this error code as noted above. I tried following the directions from these previous postings, but since Windows 7 and Vista seem to be different than XP, I can't find Windows Defender. Can someone help this older guy who is not a computer expert by any stretch of imagination :) |

| Re: receiving error message 0x800106ba for windows defender
After reading out several references I found that the issues with Windows Defender. It happens when the defender is updated. For that you have to set Windows defender on automatic instead of manual. Type services.msc from the start menu and then in that choose the appropriate option to run automatically when your windows boot up. This might fix the issue out. |
