| XviD and Vista Movie Maker I have been trying to work on a project for a week or so now, but can't seem to make the .avi files I have (XviD codec) work properly in Movie Maker. Initially I was playing them back for review in VLC and they work fine. When they first wouldn't work in Movie Maker, I tried in Media Player and Media Center and no video there either - just the audio with a black screen. So I went to the XviD website and downloaded an updated codec, but the site states that it's not compatible with x64 unless a certain version of C++ was installed. I did that, and the files will now play properly in WMP and WMC, but still no video in Movie Maker. I googled it again and found information that said to try the ffdshow codec, so I uninstalled the XviD and installed ffdshow. Still working fine in WMP/C, but not in MM. Found more information that suggested the Vista Codec Package, so uninstalled ffdshow and installed the Vista Codec Package. Again, works fine in WMP/C but not in MM. So now I'm at a loss. I've uninstalled the codec package and tried reinstalling just XviD, but still no dice. Is there any way to make this work? I'm losing so much time and momentum because I can't edit the videos in Movie Maker. I can't get the source files encoded with any other codec, and I'm most familiar with MM and the way it works and don't want to try to use something else that may be available. (I do have access to a couple other programs, but neither have been tested for x64-compatibility.) I really need to get this working. Help? :( -- Cherrii |

| Re: XviD and Vista Movie Maker WMP operates on Vista x64 as 32bit by default, Movie Maker operates as 64bit by default. So you need each flavor of decoder available. It may be simpler to convert it to in advance to a format that's better supported on 64bit Windows, such as WMV. The 32bit Windows Media Encoder would do that. -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
