safely remove hardware icon appeared for no reason

The icon appeared for no reason. the first one said to remove USB port 5..I cancelled it and system locked up. Rebooted, same icon but remove F, G, H, I hard drives message I cancelled but was unable to get on internet. Ran virus scan, defrag, nothing So I turned off all power overnight. Internet this am , icon still there. System has been locking up for 2-3 weeks no reason. I don't use external anything except speakers. The GPS plug is all that goes into USBs.

After posting I removed Open Office that had been installed for about 3 weeks, the icon disappeared, hopefully the system will quit shutting down as well. I thought it was compatible with Vista Premium?

Can you try to unplug the GPS device and reboot the machine and see whether
that happens again. You can also try to remove the USB devices from Control
Panel->System->Device Manager and see whether that will fix it. Did you
install any software or drivers recently? You may try to update the driver
of your USB devices before you reconnect it and see whether that will make
it better.
