Start Menu button in Vista doesn't work

My start button in Vista doesn't work!

I've had a look through the forums and tried the things suggested to other people (such as regedit and removing none-needed shell add ons) but nothing has helped.

The button works if set back to classic mode but I really want to avoid having to live like that or having to re-install Vista.

I've rolled back a week but that hasn't helped - the only software change I've had is swapping AVG to Avast! - No hardware changes.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!

Try removing Avast to see if its not the culprit. Since the Start button
works in Classic, navigate to Accessories, right click Command Prompt, click
'Run as Administrator' at the command prompt, type SFC /SCANNOW to see if it
will resolve any problem with system files and settings.

1.By using msconfig.exe disable all in HKCU\...\Run and in HKLM\...\Run
    and check results
2.Import this *.reg file which I attached below + restart

Re: Start Menu button in Vista doesn't work

most have probably figured out by now that some nasty site you visited probably stuck you with a hidden program you hadn't counted on - and that your security software hasn't a clue about. in my case, yes, first i started getting hourglasses when i moused to the left of my icon bar and then finally the start button would not work - at all. well, we despite this, all of us here at least managed to turn our pc's off and get back on again somehow. so now. here's what i did. i am an aol dial-uper so you'll have to go slow with me. oh, and ...

..start reading here. these are aol terms so figure out how they apply to you.

"clear your footprints" - all of them in every form.

clear your "favorites" from all sites you - or someone you know - might consider 'questionable'

get rid of all those 'iffy' apps you've picked up over the months and years by going to control panel and uninstalling them

    restart your computer

oops! you can no longer get on line?? if you are an aoler and have a disk - run it and reinstall. i cannot advise other providers.

maybe this will work for you. it has for me.
