| Latest Windows Vista updates
On re-booting after Windows updates KB954459, KB957097, KB955069 my PC would not re-start, had to do an automatic system restore. The error code received was 0x80242016. I've noticed from the forums a number of other people have had problems after these updates. Does anyone know if there is a fault in one of these updates or is it just coincidence ? Also does anyone know exactly what the above error code means ? |

On MSDN and TechNet, 0x80242016: (Also recognized as Error 8214) ERROR_DS_CANT_ON_RDN The directory service cannot perform the requested operation on the RDN attribute of an object. (Somehow, this doesn't sound appropriate.) Server version of Update, 0x80242016: WU_E_UH_POSTREBOOTUNEXPECTEDSTATE The state of the update after its post-reboot operation has completed is unexpected. Thanks Mark, I'd been unable to find that link for free online support. I've now submitted a request and will post back the answer if I get one. I have had the same problem, Carina! Called Microsoft support center, and all they could promise was that they would "report this to supervisors and work on it".....could not tell me how to know when they had the problem fixed. In the meantime, I did a system restore back to Nov 12th, before this Windows Update Agent appeared, and I refuse to load it until Microsoft responds somehow! How are we to load our updates now? Sheeeesh..... "carina" wrote: > On re-booting after Windows updates KB954459, KB957097, KB955069 my PC would > not re-start, had to do an automatic system restore. On Nov 20th, Windows Update once again asked me to install this "Windows Update Agent"........after turning off my computer and rebooting (without installing the problem update)......Windows Update NOW does not even give me the option to load it....so there is NO WAY for me to get updates at all...reported to Microsoft as case #1085362117.......they, according to their reps, have NO website address to go to to download the latest updates either!!! ARRRRGH!!! If you are having same problems, please advise. "debs" wrote: > I have had the same problem, Carina! I posted a request to Microsoft via the link Mark gave me and received the following response: "Dear Sir/Madam, Thank you for your email. To enable us to help you resolve this issue, may I suggest on one of the following: A useful resource is the Knowledge Base on our website, where we have published a large collection of articles and FAQs about our products. You can access it by going to our website at: http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 You can also go online and visit our UK newsgroups to exchange ideas and information with other Microsoft product users. There is also the chance to talk to our Most Valued Professional (MVP). http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx If you do not find the answer you are looking for and wish to discuss your alternative support options, please call our Customer Support team on 0870 60 10 100. The lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Thank you again for getting in touch. Kind regards, AZMA NASEER Customer Service Professional Microsoft Customer Services " This response was of no use whatsoever; I'd already searched the knowledge base & User groups and couldn't find the answer, which was why I was contacting Microsoft. Having checked the update log (WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows directory), the 3 problem updates were eventually successfully installed on shutdown the next day. I still don't know why they failed in the first place though. | RE: Latest Windows Vista updates
Carina, I ended up calling Windows VISTA support at 1-800-936-5700...spent several hours on the phone, while their agent "took control" of my computer.....they finally went to a Microsoft screen available only to them, and downloaded the Update Agent manually for me.......today, at 1:36 a.m. CST, Windows notified me there were 3 new Windows updates to install, and I was able to install them without an error. Microsoft had told me not to look for any new updates until the 2nd Tuesday of each month (dec 9th).....I assured them that updates come much more often than that for Vista! This proves I was right about that.......at least now we have this phone number to call specifically for Vista support....if you should need it in the future. Hope it helps. Calling Microsoft Support did absolutely no good at all....they spent hours trying to fix the error, and finally gave me the Vista support number! DebS. | Re: Latest Windows Vista updates
Thanks for that, Walt.....but I include ANY update for Vista as an update..including Windows Defender. By the way, I now am missing one that came out for Defender on Nov 15th, during the time when I had to do a system restore, and Vista Support was not able to retrieve that one for me.....any idea how to get to a certain update on ANY microsoft net site to download it, if your computer was not working properly at the time it came out originally? According to what I have been told, there is not a way....this just doesn't make sense to me.....I think Microsoft should provide a way for Vista customers, in particular, to access critical and important updates at times when errors like this happen......a way to access them for themselves, without having to spend hours on the phone with a technician......they tried to retrieve this one and could not anyway.......so.....will the same update come out later, possibly, since my computer was not able to download it on Nov 15th? (Was in the middle of system restore at that time, and Vista failed to load this particular one when I reupdated my system) Thanks. The details for that update (copied with added notes from the update history) are: Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.47.283.0) Installation date: 11/14/2008 9:39 PM Installation status: Successful- (but was removed when I did my system restore Nov 12th!! DebS) NOW HOW DO I GET IT?????? Have to call Windows Vista support again? Update type: Important Install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed. Hi Guys...Im having problems too. I've had them downloaded twice and they freeze everything up. What is wrong with Microsoft...this must be happening to scores of Vista users?? What would you advise as best and easiest option? I've currently turned off updates which obviously isn't good!
