Vista Crashes After SP1 Installation

After I installed service pack 1 all hell broke loose on my friends
computer which i built. I was getting blue screen of deaths and another
message. I got it to work with a few attempts of system repair, nd when
i restart it, it ruins again. When i attempted to install Service Pack 1
again same thing happenned. I repaired again, picked up the dumps and
error messages. One is :

How are you installing SP1? Are you doing it through Windows Update or
from the single-file download?

There are several drivers that have known issues with SP1. The Windows
Update version checks and will not offer SP1 if it finds one of them
installed. I don't think the standalone SP1 will do that.

I get this when I install Vista Service Pack 1 on x64. I've tried doing a clean install with nothing but the OS installed and using the stand-alone installer, and installing everything I use and using Windows Update to install all the updates in whatever order it chooses. In both cases I get this error message whenever I try to access my second hard drive. Oddly that is the only hardware I can't access.
