Windows can't open Add Printer (0x000000c1)

I have Vista Home Premium running on my laptop. I have an HP C5280 All-in-One printer on a desktop Vista machine. When I go through the control panel to printers and select "add printer", I get this error message:

Windows can't open Add Printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000000c1)

    What is going on? Thanks!

You have a bad driver in there somewhere:

I have followed Bruce Sanderson's "Clean Printer Drivers" instructions (note: the script does not work on Vista but I followed his instructions on manually editing the registry) and I still get the same error message!

    Any other suggestions?

Hi akr, just wondering did you goto start-control panel-classic
view-printers then right click anywhere on a blank area and select-run as
    administrator- then add printer?

Okay, I tried the run as... suggestion. This time I received a "printui.exe - Bad image" error message. It states: C:\Windows\system32\tcpmonui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your sys admin.

Hmm, where does the system get tcpmonui.dll ? Please don't say I have to reinstall Vista! *smile*

tcpmonui.dll is a Microsoft system file for the Standard TCP/IP port monitor

If your home machine is 64bit and you installed some vendor 32bit software,
it's possible they replaced the file without verifying the OS architecture.

Maybe you could try and do a system restore to a date earlier then when the
    32 bit software was installed.

Did you install the original software and drivers that came with your
    printer.

I have reinstalled the original drivers for the network printer. My computer is 32bit so perhaps I installed 64bit software by accident? Anyway, if I navigate via Networks to the printer name, I can add the printer. However, accessing the Add Printer dialog box still encounters the "Can't Add Printer" error message. I guess I have a corrupted tcpmonui.dll file.

    Thanks for all your help!
