| Sending Docs by Vista Fax stopped working
Hi, I have been 'happily' using Vista(32) fax to send word docs and pdf's. Tried today and got this message when trying to send a word document. "This fax cannot be sent at this time. Please launch the compose form from Windows fax and scan and click on New Fax to attach this document to send out as fax." Polite and simple, so I tried it. And got "The message could not be sent. The data is invalid" Direct and unhelpful! I can receive faxes perfectly, and can send filled in cover sheets with no problems, just cannot send any 'converted' files. Have looked in the MSfax directory off NT off microsoft off programdata to see if there were any temp files causing problems, but couldn't see anything. Have looked in control panel services, prnter management to see if there were any stuck, nothing! If it were a normal printer, would now be unistalling driver and reinstalling but don't know how to reinstall if I do delete it. Also have tried restarting print spooler service and fax service to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Please post some actual information. We don't even know how you are trying to send these documents nor what you mean by "converted files." Examine the changes made to your system before you lost this capability. You appear to have a rendering problem, so state the file associations for the document types you are trying to fax. |

Trying to use it to send MS Word (2007) docx and pdf from Adobe Acrobat 7. The intial problem occurs when I try to print the fax to the fax printer driver. Printer dialogue box and all settings look OK, when I press print I get the dialogue box that tells me to go via the console. When I use the console and try to 'attach' the file, it flashes the document up on the screen appearing to scan or convert it as normal, then I get the second error box about data being invalid. As I said, it will send the cover sheets as standalone faxes. does that clarify the position? the problem is it did last week, it was working perfectly last week, only when I went to use it yesterday that noticed the problem. I haven't installed any new software or hardware, maybe Vista has updated, don't know, but otherwise nothing has changed. Thanks for your help btw! OK will have a look through and see what I can discover. Have attached a jpeg of what I get when I try to print a word doc to fax. |

It means that your current version of Acrobat does not support the rendering of faxes to TIF. Printing from Acrobat to fax should automatically render the document as a TIF file and attach it to a new fax message. |

Then you'll need to examine the changes made to your system that might have changed file associations for these file types. Unfortunately, these things are much more difficult to determine in Vista than in earlier OS. Vista no longer uses a "printto" verb to call the proper application for rendering. Instead it uses GDI, Fax Print Driver and Fax TIFF library to print the body of the message into TIFF format. So look for any changes that might have affected those files. |

Also, please clarify this statement: "I get the dialogue box that tells me to go via the console." You should be getting a new fax message window that has the document rendered and attached as a TIF file. What are you getting instead? |

I've never been able to fax directly from Office/Word using Windows Fax and Scan. I always have to create the document and then go to create a new fax and attach it there. |

Not the behavior a normal installation provides. You can print to the fax printer from an application when WFS is installed and configured correctly. |

Hmm. If I try to send to FAX from Word it takes me to a web page where I can sign up for online services like eFax etc., it even tells me what it's doing on the way. I wonder if it's because I installed Office relatively recently? |

Hold that thought. I just realised that I can "Print to Fax" using the regular print option and selecting the fax as the destination. |

I have confirmed that Microsoft has no repros on this issue at all. Some things to check: 1. You have no other instances of WFS running 2. Your %temp% folder is not full. Clear your %temp% folder and try again. If you get the same error, examine your %temp% folder and see if a unique TIF file has been created for this transmission. E-mail and it would not copy. |
