| Partition Hard Drive When i go to shrink the 175 space using vista, it says the the maximum shrink size 63GB. 1) what does this mean? Does it mean the new partition space will be 63GB and the C drive 112GB? 2) If the answer to 1 is yes, would a third party program allow me to create a larger new partition? 3) can a partition created using vista be reversed or resized later on? thanks |

Vista, millions of lines of code and nothing included that easily lets you resize a partition without risking losing data. Priceless! |

| Re: Partition Hard Drive
The built-in shrink utility will be able to decrease the partition size till it bumps against the first unmovable/locked system file. If you want to decrease the partition further you will need a 3rd party Disk Management tool. I use Acronis Disk Director suite (ver 11.0 latest build). It is 100% Vista compatible. After installing the above program, create the emergency CD. Reboot the computer and boot up with this CD. Do your partition work from there. You will not be hampered with locked files. -- Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience "hawaiidream" <hawaiidream.3fklvd@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:hawaiidream.3fklvd@DoNotSpam.com... > > I just received a new laptop with vista ultimate, 200GB HDD, of which > 175 is available on C:. > > When i go to shrink the 175 space using vista, it says the the maximum > shrink size 63GB. > > 1) what does this mean? | Re: Partition Hard Drive Yes, the builtin Vista partition tool is rather inadequate, although it is better than XP's. Partition Magic is not compatible with Vista, so don't try that. A program I've used for this purpose is Boot-It NG: 'Boot Manager, Partition Manager, and Drive Image Utility - BootIt Next Generation' (http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/boo...generation.htm) You can download and try the program free for 30 days. It has a built-in program to burn a CD with the program on it. After you do that, you don't need to install it on your hard drive, but can boot from it and run it from the CD. It's a rather "geeky" tool, with an old DOS style format, but it's fairly easy to use. There are lots of videos and tutorials you can look at on this page: 'TeraByte Unlimited :: Support :: BootIt Next Generation' (http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/sup...generation.htm) -- LeeTutor If this answer has been of help to you, then please add to my Reputation by clicking on the middle icon at the top right. :geek: |

It will tell you what is really up. |

I think AIX is the only one that actually gets it right. Linux lvreduce mostly works but can corrupt the filesystem and drops data that existed in the former data blocks. |

Yes, but the point is you shouldn't need to purchase third party software to do something the OS itself should be capable of on it's own. The list of Windows failures is way too long to list fully but some notable flaws that impact many follow: 1. The shell, Windows Explorer, has been fu*ked up for years and Microsoft makes no attempt to truly fix it. Even many died in the wool MVP's that otherwise endlessly sing the praises of Windows hate it and admit they use something else. 2. UAC. The mere mention of it is enough to rile anyone. 3. Movie Maker. One of the biggest pieces of crap ever from Microsoft refuses to play video files or starts, then chokes while many third party free software have no issues at all playing the same files. 4. Stupid things like Windows "forgetting" drive letter assignments for USB devices, also not remembering how you arranged your icons on your desktop if you change users or resolution or deciding to change which folder view is shown regardless what you do. 5. The dreaded Explorer needs to close because... BS and never once giving any valid reason why other than saying it is some internal Windows file causing it. 6. Ridiculously long file processing times when copying or moving files. This takes us back to basic file system upkeep. Disk Management in Vista is pitiful, clumsy and crude. You have issues resizing a partition or pushing unallocated space back and forth. Using the included disk defragmenter tool is laughable with it never doing a decent job and precious little feedback. The poor implementation of so-called security features forcing users to deal with cryptic file permissions and ownerships. There's simply too many rough spots for a product (Windows) that's been on the market for over twenty years. |
