Put Password on Folder in Win 7

I have Win 7 (64 bit) and want to hide a folder and password protect it. I
knew how to do this in XP. I have created a compressed folder (and put the
stuff in it I want to password protect. The next step was to double click
it and then click Fille/Password Protect. However, when I click File, I do
not see the option to password protect. All I see is "Extract All" and
"Close". Can someone tell me how to do this in Win 7? Thank you in
    advance.
    Bob

You can't protect the file or folder with a password natively in Windows 7,
but you can encrypt them :-)

I would suggest a web search for such a third party app to do that
since that function is not available in windows 7. You can edit
permissions but that is not the same as password protection.

You can accomplish this with the free TrueCrypt software, but I guess
not quite in the way you're used to.

With TrueCrypt you can create a virtual drive which lives as an
encrypted file until you mount (open) it as a drive. You can work with
your files on that drive and then unmount (close) it.

If you want to move files into it by dragging, I believe you'd have to
use the shift key, since Windows sees it as a separate drive. Or just
copy and later delete the clear copy.

Thanks for the tip. Is answers.microsoft.com an internet news server NNTP?
I set up an account on it assuming it was an "Internet News Server" NNTP.
When I told it to dowload its various news groups, it said it was unable to
connect to the server. I was using port 119.

Like WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, and Vista before it, Windows 7's NTFS
file security paradigm doesn't rely on, or allow, the crude and
cumbersome method of password protection for individual applications,
files, or folders. Instead, it uses the superior method of explicitly
assigning file/folder permissions to individual users and/or groups.

Further, unlike WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, and Vista before it, Windows
7's NTFS file security paradigm does not allow password protection for
    compressed folders

Thank you Gene. This was most helpful. I installed TrueCrypt and it is
    meeting the need quite nicely.

    Excellent.

It seems not to be everyone's cup of tea, although it's fine for my limited
needs, so I'm glad you find it useful.
