CD-Rom Drive Missing from My Computer

I am having an Emachines desktop PC running with Windows Vista 32bit. Till yesterday I was having CD drive in my system but today I cannot see the CD Rom anymore in My Computer. Below is the error message I’m getting:

“The error code is: This device cannot start. (Code 10).”

I don’t have any idea why and how the problem occurred. Can anyone of you suggest me how can I get back my CD Rom drive again? Thank you.

Try this and see if it works.

• Go to Start > Click RUN > Type ‘regedit’ > Press Enter.
• This will open Registry Editor where you need to navigate to the following location:
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
• Here on the right side, if you see UpperFilters then simply right-click and Delete UpperFilters.
• Similarly do with the LowerFilters. If it is available in the right pane, right click and delete the same
• Now close the Registry and restart the system to effect the changes.

See if your CD drive is back. If not, check this for more info http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461

I am also facing this issue and Thanks for the steps techman but what the Upperfilter and lowerfilter. I just don’t know what it is. As it is Registry I just cannot delete anything without knowing what deleting, right ? Can you please help?

Well as the techman has given the KB URL as well where Microsoft itself has written to delete the UpperFilter and Lowerfilter than what else you need to confirm ? Just go ahead and delete them. If you are troubleshooting Windows using Microsoft’s own written procedure, I don’t think we need to confirm anything.
