Mouse not recognized after reboot following the 04/08 patch

I have a new system that has been working flawlessly til this patch. vista64
home premium, and the offending device is a microsoft usb wheelmouse optical.
Now when ever I reboot it says new hardware found and driver instillation
failed. I downloaded and installed intellipoint 6.1 for 64bit. and device
manager shows no conflict and if i just clear out of the error boxes it works
fine. Just everytime I reboot it does same thing again. It in fact, it cannot
even recognize the device it is trying to install drivers for which is why i
think it fails the driver update on reboot. I found out the hard way by
telling vista to ignore the problem and it promptly disconnected the mouse
altogether. I tried restoring to a point before the patch but it did not fix
the problem. One of the patches warned that it cannot be removed , so my
guess is that is what is causing the problem. Since this was just yesterday I
kinda hope they will fix this patch, but I know I cannot rely on this wait
and see tactic. Any ideas would be appreciated

Interface Device called: Microsoft 3-button mouse with intelliEye(TM). And it
cannot find drivers for this mystical device. My mouse is a microsoft
wheelmouse optical (usb) and has the proper drivers installed. If I try to
remove either the non existent hid device or the mouse it stops working. I
just need a way to disable the human interface device without disabling the
wheelmouse, or I need a proper driver for something called a microsoft
3-button mouse with intelliEye.

Try this.
Uninstall all mice you see in Device Manager. Reboot with your wheelmouse
plugged in and follow the prompts.

I tried that and same thing as before, however in the interest of science :P
I uninstalled the mouse, AND the microsoft 3-button mouse with intelliEye
under human interface devices, and unplugged the mouse and let it reboot
without a mouse. And when i plugged in the mouse after reboot it installed
drivers but no mouse pointer, rebooted several times and no mouse at all. In
desperation I plugged in another identical mouse i had and rebooted, same
thing, ARRRRGGGGH,
Looked in cmos to make sure the bios was detecting the usb devices, and it
was listed there, rebooted again and I had a mouse again. Same problem ....
but this time, using the different mouse, it now lists the correct mouse in
both places. no more microsoft 3-button with intellieye. Under "mice and
other pointing devices" it shows the correct mouse with the intelipoint
dirvers, no problems. Under "human interface devices" it shows the correct
mouse, no problems detected, but under drivers it shows no info, either
unavailable or not known, when i try to load intellitype drivers for the
device it says no drivers for the device found in the location(or on
internet) Is it normal for vista to list the mouse in both places, or have I
or something some how started this human interface device deal? I might put
the other mouse back in to see if it reverts back to the 3-button mouse under
human interface devices, but that doesn't lead me to an answer. I am new to
vista, and 64 bit OS's. Only thing I can say is it all happened after the
patches yesterday, maybe coincedence. I read some other posts about mouse
problems, but I cannot find any reference to "hid" device hardware, as they
suggested.

Rollback the patches one at a time, testing as you go, to see if one of them
is the culprit.

I tried that before, and it didn't work. But to keep the process alive I am
off to try it again, btw I put the old mouse in and it still shows the
correct device in both places, so it seems it is some sort of system or OS
problem. I post what happens, thank you for your time and advice. :)

Ya, rolling back updates didn't work. I guess what I need is a driver for the
wheelmouse that Human interface devices will accept. I am not sure why this
became a problem after all this time tho :/ perhaps my disc cleaner or
registry program removed something wrong.

Restore your registry from your registry backup. You did backup your
registry before you ran the cleaner, right?

DO NOT use registry cleaners! See this:

I've encountered exactly the same problem on Vista Home Premium...all
was working fine until Windows Update kicked in - now when I boot up my
mouse isn't recognised.

My standard mouse is wireless but I've also tried connecting a USB and
PS/2 device....although recognised as new hardware no driver can be
located.

Using Windows mouseless is a real pain...

Suggestions appreciated

Uninstall the recent updates. Restart. If this solves your problem,
reinstall one at a time, testing as you go, until you find the culprit.
For future reference, do not automatically install updates. Choose “Download
updates for me, but let me choose when to install them”

thanks I ended up going to a prior restore point..after some time
finally got ti al working again..I'll be wary as to which updates I
apply

Restorng Registry and all files that were backed up did not fix it. Prior to
winxp I had to reformat my pc every 6 months to keep it running smooth, with
winxp that was reduced to less then once a year, with use of a registry
cleaner, the need to format was gone and windows could finally run wthout
destroying itself. Granted on a brand new pc It is probably not needed so
much, but installing windows creates hundreds of errors on itself before you
even install a program. The registry is windows biggest failure and the cause
of of many many problems. anyways, I need my pc over the weekend, if i can't
find a fix by then I will just format and reinstall next week. It's only
about 5 weeks old, not that much to lose except the 2 days to download
patches and updates from all my programs :/

This is in response to *Mouse not recognized after reboot following the
04/08 patch.* Ok the only way to get the mouse back is to uninstall the
update for window vista that is the only one that causes the problem. It
took half a day but that is the one once you restore and then hide that
one you are fine. That one you can not unistall by clicking you must
restore to before the update. Hope this helps all of you. Let me know if
there is a way to keep the update and the mouse. So I can unhide the
update. The update that causes my problem is (KB938371) Update window
vista.

I got my mouse back, and it works. I just get this annoying new hardware
found and driver instal has failed every time i reboot :/ My problem is
definetly in the HID section and the driver for it. I have found the drivers
in my c:\windows\system32\drivers folder. mouhid.sys amd mouclass.sys. I am
using the intellipoint 6.2 driver for 64bit under "mice and pointing devices"
in device manager. However when i try to load the drivers for the hid device
section, vista64 doesn't allow me to pick a file for a driver and pointing to
the folder results in the same driver not found.
Also if i uninstall the device, and try to manually install hardware, mouse
is not even an option, nor is it listed under microsoft.
In other posts on other threads they suggest installing the mouse as hid
compliant mouse, (which is the way it is on my winxp machine) but this is not
a option for me that I have been able to find, but I think it would work if I
could. But mice are not listed in the hardware wizard for me.
Not sure why they want you to have your mouse loaded under 2 different
devices but it's the same way on my winxp machine, under mice, and repeated
under HID.
Probably so they can get it to load before the OS while still using usb. I
hate that my motherboard does not have a ps2 mouse port .
