| Vista SP1 and Firewire 800
Hi I am using Windows Vista Ultiamte SP1. I read that they would be incorporating Firewire 800 (1394B) capability with SP1. Does anyone know if this is, in fact, true? |

Check the release notes: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en "alstein" <alstein.36jj3e@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:alstein.36jj3e@DoNotSpam.com... > > Hi > > I am using Windows Vista Ultiamte SP1. That's what I was afraid of, so I didn't want to comment. I looked also. There are a number of references on the web to SP1 supporting 1394b at full speed. For example, a firewire 800 card at http://www.koutech.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=332 lists support as: "*1 FireWire 400 is supported by Microsoft native drivers for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP/Vista. FireWire 800 is supported by Windows XP SP1 or later." If you search microsoft.com on "1394b" you see lots of info, particularly standards for hardware devs. It appears that 1394b is supposed to be in SP1 and I hope someone will post to this thread one way or the other. I downloaded firewire 800 drivers from Unibrain (and was advised by a rep that they were free for generic use but needed to be licensed for industrial applications). I installed the drivers. I don't know how to actually confirm if I am now getting firewire 800 speeds, but I did test my external LaCie drive using PC Pitstop. With my fireiwre 400 cable connecting the drive to my PC, and before installing the new drivers, uncached disk speed was 19 mbs/s. After installing the drivers and leaving the firewire 400 connection unchanged, the speed increased to 36 mb/s. Once I connected the firewire 800 cable and tested again the speed was 51 mb/s. Seems like something is working! |
