No Audio output device is installed

I was having some problem on my Windows Vista system and therefore I had to use the restore cd that came with it to get things working again. But after this, I am not getting any sound on my system, there is always a red x mark displaying on the volume button and when I click on it then it says that there is no audio device installed? I have tried to uninstall the device and letting the computer to again reinstall it but it doesnt seems to be working. Any help on this matter?
