| Windows Vista USB Mass Storage Device driver problem
I'm plugging a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Harddrive into my HP Pavilion dv9208nr Notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium and the drivers will not load. Everytime I try re-installing the driver, I get the following message: Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. USB Mass Storage Device. I have uninstalled the USB Root Hubs and I have deleted the INFCACHE file. Any other ideas of how I can get the drivers to load? -- chris |

cb40oz, You likely have some corrupted inf related files (over and above the infcache.1) that could be the source of your problem. The following article describes how to recover a corrupted Vista data base, such as you seem to have: http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/...essage.id=4357 The above described procedure is more extensive than the one where you remove the one infcache.1 file. If you decide to perform this procedure, on the first reboot after completing the effort, connect your USB device(s). Upon booting, Windows will commence installing some (maybe all) your USB devices automatically. If Windows asks for drivers, point it toward C:\Windows\System32. Of the for individuals I know of who performed this procedure on this forum, all of them reported that their USB recognition problems were 100% resolved. Post back on results. -- freddy "cb40oz" wrote: > I'm plugging a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Harddrive into my HP Pavilion > dv9208nr Notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium and the drivers will not > load. There are likely no Vista drivers included. When Vista tries to install the XP drivers it runs into trouble. Check with the manufacturer - it should always be your first step in trouble shooting. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! Sometimes on certain laptops, some of the USB ports are under-powered. And sometimes they are defective. |
