Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

I recently upgraded to Windows vista. After doing so, my line in for my
sound is no longer working! my volume mixer doesnt show anything as if its
muted, its not even there.

When I right click, and select playback, it only shows speakers /
headphones, checked as if working properly, no line in is visible.

When select the recording tab, it shows my microphone as working, and
checked. underneith it shows my line in, but says "currently unavailable",
and it is not checked. (and wont let me configure). When I look further
into it, and right click, selecting properties, It says (under controller
properties) that it is working properly! It also shows that the jack
information as rear panel 3.5 mm jack (its not, its a traditional jack like a
headset or microphone utilizes. under device usage: it shows use this device
(enable).

Im sure there is some way for me to "enable" my line in jack so the sound
from my other devices comes through, but i do not know where to go.

I have a sigmatel driver. I sat through Dell customer support and
downloaded the new Driver that works for sigmatel, uninstalled the driver,
reinstalled. Also retrieved a driver directly from sigmatel for the issue,
and still nothing. This is why I presume there is just a simple setting
somewhere.

Any idea what im missing?

Re: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

I'm taking a guess here, so forgive me. I'm using RealTek. It sounds
close to the same options, but mine as a thing where it must be set as
DEFAULT. Even though it is enabled. ????

Hope it helps,
Shawn

Re: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

Unfortunatly, I have tried that avenue as well and failed. Where my mic is,
underneith it shows the microphone as "working". Under where it shows the
line in, it shows as "currently unavailable".

I have seen some new things written that express a binary change in the
regedit, but all posts that show this fix, do not have my make or model
computer. I have tried on the Dell websites as well. Just very frustrating I
am sure you can understand.

Hi Scott,

Sorry to hear that. Did you increase the volume level & unmute the
Playback settings. That was how I got my audio to play through the
speakers from the INLINE or micIN.

RE: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

I fixed this problem on my Dell E520 by editing the registry to enable
LineInputMonitoring.

(halfway down many msgs) has the detailed procedure.

I still can't get Record What You Hear as in XP. Anybody have a fix for that?

Forget it Scott... No Easy Fixes as yet that I know. I have done all that
you noted and downloaded a 94MB file from a sound card vendor that was
suggested in another forum. Hopefully MS or Sigmatel one will listen to the
users who are upset and do something about sound volume and record mixer
problems soon. Right now they all seem to be more interested in selling
products that are not compatable than assisting users who get roped into
buying systems that have an OEM version of Vista already installed.

reinstall driver

Try re-installing vista sigmatel driver from dells support site. I had the same problem. When you plug in a cable to the line in jack you should get a popup window that asks how you want to use the jack. (as line in or mic). This only works if the software is installed properly.

RE: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

For the Vista system, the registry key you're looking for is
"EnableInputMonitor". This is changed from 00 to 01, and a reboot is
required. However, the post/link listed below is excellent and solves the
problem. Don't know why this is disabled by default and it takes a rocket
scientist to correct, but then we'll never know!

Issue: where the hell are LINE-IN in VISTA?

System:
Dell Dimension 9200
SIGMATEL AUDIO CODECS (vers controler: 6.10.0.5511). drivers yet updated.
Updated motherbroad.

Modified windows register like this:EnableImputMonitor = 01

In panel of control..SOUNDS...I cannot see line-in

WHERE ARE LINE-IN??????

JohnGalt,

my speakers are INSPIRE 280 -very basics-
I connect back my PC the red/white in one jack for sound xbox 360...in line-in. I am pretty sure that line in is mute, updating drivers and motherbroad, changing windows registrer...and still I cannot see in panel control-->sound-->Speakers--->level bar lever for line-in (I see only: sound of speakers and Monitor in)

What type of audio do you have your Sigmatel set you - if anything other
than 2 channel / stereo audio, then you're telling Sigmatel to use you
line in jack as a redirected output jack for rear speakers./...

"Scott" hasn't been here since April of last year (when he made the
post you are replying to).

Re: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

This worked for me.

To enable line-in monitoring:

-Right click speaker icon in tray.
-Left click playback devices.
-left click speakers.
-left click properties.
-left click levels tab.
-SCROLL DOWN to "rear blue" and adjust.
-hate vista.

Re: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

Hi -

this is the closest thread i can find to my issue. The solutions posted help me somewhat but not completely. Here is the issue.
I am using vista 32 bit Ultimate. I have a sigmatel sound card, i wish to record music via the line in and hear what i am recording live. Problem is - i am using surround sound speakers, i find i can only hear the treble part of the sound as its recorded. The line in area in sounds\recording devices is non configurable, that is the issue. How do i enable this area to be configurable and set my configuration to 5.1? This is driving me nuts, i even reverted back to xpsp2 but the problem is there too!
Anybody got a resolution to this?
Many thanks - Victor

You don't use someone else's thread, you start your own.

Reason? One is that it's considered rude to hijack an existing
thread. Two is that after a thread has been active for a couple days,
people that aren't already involved in the discussion don't check
back.

Re: Sound problems with the line in for vista (sigmatel)

Quoted from another guy: IT WORKS!
--------------- Worked on Dell XPS 420 --------------------------------
Hi
I'm an Korean, so I can't speak English VERY fluently - but I can read all of the posts and I am understanding the problem. (If I have few spelling mistakes, if so, please just pass it on.)

From google search, I found that Computer makers (ex: sony) are shutting down 'stereo mix'

to prevent illegal recording - (maybe like songs from iTunes or something : songs that have DRM(non copyable music files). (so, people are just turning on the song, and record it, and make it to a free-DRM file.))

So, some notebook makers disabled recording from computer's direct streaming audio.

-> Like you said, It is not a hardware problem, because it works fine on XP - it means that exTongue TiedONY has blocked 'stereo mix' somehow on their pre-installed Vista.

Here is my help.

Before you start anything, turn on a music file - raise your volumes up and up!!!!

Test if sound is coming out of your speakers!! (If not, your speaker is a problem)

Download Virtual Audio Cable (search google or something - it is not a freeware - but try it first, then find a crack)

Install Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) on your computer.

(When installing ---- Vista -> Popup named like "do you want to install this driver?" (red letters) pops out -> click ok or something, you NEED to install the driver)

Taskbar -> Go to the playback devices (right-click the speaker icon) - Select the 'Playback' tab.

There will be a new option named 'Line 1' or 'VAC 1' or SOMETHING that is similar like this.

Make that 'Line 1' Default. (There is a button named 'Set Default' below the window.)

Close all programs (specially programs that have sound - itunes, realplayer, windows media player)

Then, run the program Audio Repeater (Included in the VAC that you installed- search the start->all programs or the search program files in CSmile

Set 'Wave in' to 'Line 1'

Set 'Wave out' to "SPEAKER" (or your computer's original default selection - mine is Vaio VGN-CR220E and it is named 'Speaker/HP', so select this)

After this, click 'Start' tab below.

Then, turn on any music(ex: an mp3 file- a long one should be good so you can test on it) on your computer.

You should hear the sound from your speaker.

NOW, If you want to record this mp3 stream, just follow the bottom part.

You will see 'Line 1' on the recording tab. (Go to sound manager (right-click the speaker icon on your taskbar-> recording devices) -> 'Recording' tab -> make 'Line 1' Default)

Run Audacity (or any recording programs)

Run Audacity -> Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O tab -> See 'Recording' and make 'device' into 'Line 1'

Enjoy Recording computer's stereo!

p.s

Here is the problem -> you have to make Audio Repeater to the above settings every time you reboot, so

use it only when you need it! (So, : After Recording stereo from computer, change back to the normal notebook's settings)

Thanks for reading - hope it will work,
