Using Canon Scanner with Windows Fax and Scan - is it possible?

I am using Canoscan 5000S scanner. It was working quiet well on Windows XP. Recently I went for fresh Windows Vista upgrades. And before upgrading I was able to locate right Vista drivers. The scanner was installed and it is detected. Now the issue lies with Microsoft Fax and scan application. It is not able to find the scanner. The device is listed in Scanner and Cameras. I am able to access the scanner through third party software but not through Windows applications. This is a bit wired. I am struggling to make it proper. I tried to re-install all stuff back from scratch hoping that it will work fine. It looks there is some internal compatibility issue with Vista.

I have a canon DR-2080C and experience the same problem. Any solution would be appreciated....
Also, unrelated: Can anyone recommend a good, simple scanning program that allows for easy scanning and storing of documents? I was using PaperValet so far but that has not been updated in a long time...

This kind of things are common with Vista. I also screwed up my network after adding Vista and my network scanner is not detected. This is far more irritating. I am having a similar scanner at my home also. I struggling to run that on Vista 64bit edition. My issue lies with scanner detection. As it is not helping much.
