Using Canon Scanner with Windows Fax and Scan - is it possible?

I have a Canoscan 5000S scanner, which worked fine under WinXP. I have
installed the latest Vista drivers and software from Canon's website.
The device is listed as a scanner under "Scanners and Cameras" and it
continues to work fine when accessed via Canon's Toolbox Application
or by third-party applications that use the TWAIN interface. However,
neither Microsoft's Fax and Scan application not the Photo Gallery
application (which I care much less about) recognise that the scanner
exists! This appears to be because the Microsoft applications want to
see a scanner with a WIA driver. Canon have produced WIA drivers for
their scanners in the past (though these have tended to be less
functional than their TWAIN drivers) but it is not clear from the
documentation on their website whether they think that the latest
Vista drivers include WIA support.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers (in the right order and
with the scanner disconnected!) and spent a lot of time Googling for
enlightenment. Unfortunately, VueScan, which looks as if it might
provide a solution for this problem for some Canon Scanners, does not
directly support or include a WIA convertor driver for the 5000S,
even though the VueScan program itself will communicate with the
scanner quite happily (presumably via its TWAIN interface).

Has anyone solved this problem, and/or can anyone authoritatively
state that it is not soluble without a new (and currently unavailable)
WIA driver from Canon. If the latter is the case, there are obvious,
though not very convenient, workarounds, and I can stop wasting my
time trying to find a solution!

Please respond to the Newsgroup, so that others may benefit from the exchange.

Same issue

Hi,

I have a canon DR-2080C and experience the same problem. Any solution would be appreciated....
Also, unrelated: Can anyone recommend a good, simple scanning program that allows for easy scanning and storing of documents? I was using PaperValet so far but that has not been updated in a long time...

I use a canon lide 35 and had to get the new tool box as you did.
To fax I use the tool box to scan and print to the fax printer it seems to
be working fine at this point

Is there any way of getting this scanner to run under Vista 64?
There appear to be no drivers on Canon's webpage.
thx

I do not have an answer for you, but an observation...

Using the Canon MP130 here, Windows F&S also sees only the WIA driver.
But, it's listed as being "manufactured by Canon." Click NEW
SCAN|PROPERTIES|CHANGE, and take a look.

As you note, using the scanning from other applications calls the Twain
driver.
