| Vanishing CDROM
My dvd/cd burner vanishes in Windows Vista Ultimate and I've had to do 2 system restores for windows to find it again. Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, how were you able to correct it (if it was correctable)? |

I have had this same problem. I've had to restore my computer to factory settings three time now. Suggestions I have received are to: 1).Try right cliking on the COMPUTER window & choose REFRESH: This has no effect. 2) Check the VIEW settings & TOOLS folder options, too. Also check ORGANIZE, LAYOUT menu in the COMPUTER window. Select the Navigation Pane to see an Explorer view. None of these reveal the drive. It is GONE! 3) I went to DEVICE MANAGER, right cliked on the Optiarc DVD listing, clicked on PROPERTIES, clicked on the GENERAL tab, and got the Device Status Message, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing." I went to the dos window, and was able to locate the driver. It is c:\windows32\drivers\cdrom.sys. It's there, but Windows does not recognize it. The only way I have found to get the drive back is to restore, as I said. Next time instead of backing up to the CDRom, I'm going to backup to the D: drive, because, of course, when the CDRom is missing, there is no way to restore from the normal backup procedure. Another thing I'm going to do is to backup to the CDRom, so after the factory restore I can then restore from the CDRom, and won't have to keep reinstalling and re-registering my software, not to mention the lost Office data files. After the system restore, everything works fine until I reinstall the Driver Software from my new Epson CX6000. Shortly after doing that, the CD/DVD drive disappears. I experimented with deleting the drivers, and when I got to deleting the Epson Scan software, I got a notice that an unauthorized program was trying to take control of the computer. Needless to say, I'm going to remain printerless until I can get more information. When installing the Driver software, I get a notice that Microsoft has determined that the software is incompatible, but catch-twenty-two, I do not have Internet access at home in order to select the update option. I did try updating it after installing, but lost the two-sided printing option. And, the CD/DVD Rom disappeared later, anyway. Perhaps you are also experiencing some software incompatibility. The replies I received assured me that it is impossible to delete the CD/DVD drive. However, we both know that just isn't so! I now suspect some malicious software. Any Ideas, anyone? -- Thanks for your thoughts! There was one other suggestion I forgot to note: Remove the device in HARDWARE MANAGER & reboot to see if Windows reinstalls it. This doesn't work either. |

I was able to use Method 2 with my version of Vista. When I get home I will try reinstalling my printer software. I'll let you know how things work. In the meantime, I was able to back up my Outlook Contact files to my USB drive using Export as an Excel file, so if I have to reinstall the system again, I will be able to Import it to Outlook and not have to re-enter it again. Wonder if that will work for backing up my E-mail too? I lost all the mail that had accumulated in that inbox. -- Thanks for your thoughts! "Silvershadow" wrote: > Your post fixed my issue! Well, I re-installed the Epson CX6000 printer driver and printer, and everything was fine, until I turned the computer off. When I turned it back on again this morning, the CDROM/DVD drive was gone again. The method that had worked when the driver software was deleted doesn't work. Is there a fix for the driver? |

Had Windows XP SP2 Installed on C Drive. Added another HDD F Drive Installed Windows Vista Home Premium on F Drive as Dual Boot Have 2 Optical drives (D & E) as well ie C D E and F in total. After 2 days D drive disappeared from Device Manager in Vista. Booted into Windows XP and all there again. Therefore its not a hardware problem. All drives work perfectly in XP. I have scoured these and other forums for days with no solutions only temp fixes. Its clear to me that Vista has a serious bug in its programming and XP has not. Also Internet downloads got slower and slower with Vista. Boot back to XP and it rocks along with downloads full speed. Yet again its Vista programming thats buggy. I'm using the same computer with both Operating systems so I can compare. I have now formatted F Drive (Vista gone) and then replaced the boot section of C to remove dual boot screen and Vista is gone until SP1 arrives. When I list out my Windows SYSTEM 32 there is no cdrom.sys listed, even when I show hidden files. How do I load CDROM.SYS if the DVD RW units do not work. Microsoft seem unable to automatically find out that it is not there. Microsoft seem unable to automatically find out that it is not there. cdrom.sys lives in system32\drivers. If Vista can't find drivers for a standard device, however, it's often because \windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 has become corrupted and deleting it is the workaround. You will need to edit its file permissions to grant full control to the Users group before you'll be allowed to delete it. |

Yes,I'm having the same hassle as you do.After installed OK, running for work of course we need to add more Storerages. That the bad come from. It's NOT our fault. It's the hassle from the Bill Gate's work force. My DVD gone missing when I added some more HD.That may be from so many causes of the life going ( may be virus from the net. system old incompatibility,..)but I have a very bad time.I clean all data from the c:, reinstalled vista ultimate. Now when I switch on the Vista ask me to reactivate the window again with the paying for the new serial no!Because my old registered no is being use by other(my old registration&activating of which i had deleted and repartition the drive! and is still in the Bill's office that all the price I have to pay for the evolution with the hard earn money by careless and stupidly. If I pay for the new serial no. the system still NOT work with the missing DVD I am still searching for..My system laying there like a corspe. It No devive to receiving new software and out put the anything..NO DVD,eventI put two optical drive in the box and going to bed for other day.. What do you think the new mean? Thanks for your time. |
