Missing or corrupted device driver

Hello

Just recently, something with the DVD/RW drive on my Toshiba Satellite A100
laptop has suddenly stopped working. The drive itself is fine it still loads
and acknowledges the discs but doesn't get any farther than that. So I opened
open device manager and sure enough the drive was flagged with an error
message. I opened it up and got this:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and
to see if there is a solution available.

So I clicked check for solutions and all that came up was that my driver was
up to date. Clicking on "update driver" on returned the same message and it
said the best driver was already installed. I'm not really sure what to do
here to get my DVD drive up and running again there have been no updates on
this driver and this hasn't ever happened to me before. I'm running Vista
Home Premium and I just got this computer a week ago. Thank you for your help.

RE: Missing or corrupted device driver

OK thanks. I will try that I guess and see what happens. Searching through I
did notice a lot of topics related to this kind of thing. This must be a big
problem for Vista.

RE: Missing or corrupted device driver

i had the same problem, and while i wasnt able to pinpoint the problem, but
after a friend of mine came over to troubleshoot, he suggested a system
restore (since it HAD worked before). so i system restored to a time just
after purchasing it (just after i installed all my drivers). after
rebooting, it recognized my cd/dvd drive no problem, and i proceeded to
install software from the drive, as well as burn a cd.

i dont know where the system restore option was in vista, but if you type
"system restore" in the start menu search, it will pop right up. just pick a
date or time then it worked, restore, and it should work for you.
