Can you check in your system whether you have installed any CD/DVD software after installing Vista in your computer? I had this similar issue with a software called Easy CD Creator that was not compatible with Vista OS. So I went into Control Panel and uninstalled the same software and also uninstalled all the current drivers from device manager for the dvd drives. After that when I restarted my pc, the dvd drives was recognized by my Vista system and was also showing in Windows Explorer. You can try the same suggestions and see if it fixes the issue for you.

There is a simple fix for this problem, all you need to do is manually remove the Upper and Lower Filters from the Registry and restart the pc, after that your dvd drives will be detected in Vista again. For procedures on how to remove this filters, please follow the method given here in this url - http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems
