XPost: Dual monitor problem intel 82852/82855 chipset/video card

Hi NG,

I use a Dell Latitude D400 notebook with the mentioned chipset.
Basically Vista RC1 and Final are running (without Aero of course).

In the display settings I check "Extend the desktop onto this monitor"
and "This is my main monitor" for the second (external) monitor. After
applying this setting only the internal monitor is running. If I try
"Extend the desktop onto this monitor" only it does what it is expected
to.

Does anybody have an idea what do? Under XP this has been working fine.
I've been looking on Intel's website fpr new drivers but couldn't find
any. Tried older (XP) drivers, too. All the same.

I'd be happy for any replies.

Thanks

Linus Schroeder

Wait for a full release Vista driver from vendor....this is all you can do.
They will come soon. I would expect mid-December earliest and Feb 07-latest
based on everything that's going on with all the vendors out there. Limited
funtionality is all you'll have until then with many patches for the next
year as vendors fix bugs in their initial releases...I assuming they are
rushing faster then they'd like too.

Thanks Jeff, but that doesn't help me either. As I wrote, I already used
the final release. I don't think this version will differ from that that
venders will be getting for distribution.

I know it's hard to accept but you won't see many stable drivers until after
Vista is officially released to public Jan 30, 2007. Until then, have
patience...I also have a D600 Dell notebook and know that Dell will not make
a driver final before an OS is officially released to public. Dell is very
good at continually revising their drivers throughout the lifecycle of an
OS. I realize you may have the RTM version released to volume licenses
customers or MSDN subscribers but that doesn't mean Vista is at the public
release stage. Vendors are using this time to develop better drivers and
apps....I can bet the farm you will see better driver within the first part
of next year.

RE: XPost: Dual monitor problem intel 82852/82855 chipset/video card

Success
at least for the moment lol
upgraded my dell inspiron 700m with intel 82855 graphics controller
i knew i wouldnt have aero but dont need the glass effect
when i installed the upgrade i was using an external monitor, keyboard, and
mouse
everything went ok and still had external display
somehow i lost it tho while playing yahoo spades
after the better part of two days including reading posts here i was
rummaging around in device manager and under the action menu item found add
legacy hardware
selected that, browsed for driver, installed and voila my external display
is back at least for the moment.
will use this til a better driver for vista comes out and i am ready to do a
clean install
also had to reinstall xp for dual boot cause dell aint gonna have a new
driver til april
and somehow had to call to reactivate because it said i had upgraded
hardware and i havent added any hardware (this was prior to adding legacy i
may have to do it again lol)
now i have a question

Why in device manager under monitors does it show 5 generic pnp monitors
i only have two, one on the notebook, and one external?

Re: XPost: Dual monitor problem intel 82852/82855 chipset/video card

I found a solution:

1. Install Vista as usual. It will use MS supplied drivers for the Intel
graphic stuff. Current version is 6.14.10.4656 as of 08/01/2006. DO NOT
install any Dell drivers yet.

2. When everything is up and running download the graphic drivers from
Dell. Currently the .exe is named R111509.exe.

3. Execute this file. It will extract its files to C:\Dell\...

4. This is important! Without this step the installation will fail. In
the last subfolder of C:\Dell\... find Setup.exe and set its
compatibility mode to Windowx XP SP 2 (use a right click and select
properties to get to this setting).

5. Install the drivers calling this Setup.exe.

6. Reboot.

7. Wait until everything is ready. Vista will most probably tell you
that the drivers have been installed. But it may take 3 to 5 minutes.

Now you can use the display settings to set the displays as you want.
You also can switch between them using Fn + F8.

BTW, the drivers version remains 6.14.10.4656 although you installed
older drivers with procedure.

Please let us know if you could profit from this.

Linus

RE: XPost: Dual monitor problem intel 82852/82855 chipset/video card

I found a solution on this blog linked below. Even though I don't have a Dell
700m, I have the same graphics adapter, and this suggestion to manually
install the driver works:

Quote from this blog:

"Even though this post is not directly related to Dell 700m Intel Display
Cards and Vista drivers for these cards a lot of people seem to be googling
their way to this page in search of similar answers. This update might help.
If you are running Intel(R) 82852/82855 Graphic Adaptor on Your Dell 700m and
are having problems switching to clone mode with Dual Monitors or running on
a Projector by pressing Fn-F8 key, start your Add New Hardware Wizard on
Vista, select the manual driver installation process, choose Display Adaptor
in the type of device and from the list of drivers Vita offers, choose Intel
as Manufacturer, and "Intel(R) 82852 / 82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
(Microsoft Corporation - XDDM)" as your driver, even if Vista had detected
your driver successfully during installation. Complete the Wizard and Reboot.
Once the reboot is complete, you should be able to see two display adaptors
with the same name installed in your Device Manager. Now disable Extended
Desktop and should be able to switch to a projector or clone your desktop on
your second monitor using the Fn-F8 key."

It looks like quite a few folks have been finding the tip on the dual monitor useful. However the link posted here seems to point to a ‘category link’ on my blog. This means as I write more entries on the topic ‘vista’ the solution mentioned here will move down lower in the blog.

Re: XPost: Dual monitor problem intel 82852/82855 chipset/video card

For kicks I installed Vista 32 Enterprise on a Gateway m275 tablet with the 82852/82855 chipset. Ran into the same extended desktop/inability to clone desktop issue originally posted. I found that Vista installed two instances of the video driver. With both enabled, I could extend my desktop to a second monitor but not clone it. Also, the LCD/CRT keyboard switch lost functionality. I tried other steps posted here and elswhere to get the desktop cloning to work but nothing did. I eventually got it to work by simply disabling the second driver. Now everything works beautifully, even the LCD/CRT switch. I almost never extend my desktop, but I do clone frequently for presentations because I use the tablet function to modify or ink slides during presentations. This solution is simple and uses the default Vista driver so no worries about forced driver installations.

Although Aero doesn't work I like the other Vista features and I'm quite happy with the upgrade

In case you are interested:

Intel pentium M 2.0 GHz-index score 3.9
1G Ram-index score-4.1
Aero Graphics score-1.9
3D business and gaming graphics score 1.0 (ha ha)
120GB seagate HD-4.8

I did lose tablet button functionality and the multimedia card reader. Mobility center in Vista covers most of that for the buttons so I don't miss it that much.
