Puzzle - External HDD Disk Management Error

Sponsored Links
I have a Windows Vista 64 bit operating system installed on my machine and it is not able to recognize the external hard drive even after using either firewire or eSata or usb 2.0. I first tried with eSata but it was not working. I connected the hard drive in the computer and tried restarting the pc but when loged in, it was not showing in Device manager or in my computer or disk management. So i tried with Firwire 400 and the external hdd showed in Device manager after scanning it as Disk Drive in it. But later on when i went into Disk Management, then it was not showing up there. So finally, i tried the usb connection and windows recognized it immediately and installed the drivers for this device. But when checked in my computer, it was not showing up. But it was showing up in Disk Management as Disk 1 with "Unknown" and "Not Intialized" in the box. When i tried to initialize it, it was giving me "Incorrect function" error. So, is there any other way to get this drive to work in my computer?

Re: Puzzle - External HDD Disk Management Error

Did you check whether the hard drive has been formatted yet or not? If it is formatted then with what file format, whether NTFS or Fat32? If it is still not formatted then doesnt it give you option to format the drive in the disk manager? Also, did you get any kind of drivers with the drive that is supported in the Windows Vista 64 bit operating system?

Re: Puzzle - External HDD Disk Management Error

Did you try plugging the internal Sata cables to your extenal Hard drive? You can also try to put the same hard drive inside as long as Disk Management sees to partition and format it. The problem seems to be in the disk management where you need to partition and format the drive. Also if you want to use eSata then you should check in the Bios what it shows when you plug the drive in that way. Have you checked whether you have the eSata drivers built-in the motherboard or if it is on the CD of the mobo that you have?

I have just tried using the diskpart function to create a partition on the disk. But it is still giving me error messages that "Diskpart has encountered an error: Incorrect function". When i went into the event viewer then it is giving me errors related to virtual disk service. Any ideas about this error, since it is now taking me to some other part.
