Low Free Physical Memory

It just happened recently.

I'm doing music sequencing on my machine but just this morning until
now it keeps crashing whenever i try to load samples, and it said
there's low physical memory. I've checked processes but none of them use
much memory. However the Free physical memory remains at 16-20 MB even
though i have 4gb of ram.

It happens even when i've just booted. It starts from about 2000+ and
drops gradually until 20.

Re: Low Free Physical Memory

More information needed.
This kind of warning can mean that there are two many background processes
running.
Do you have a paging file, preferably on a separate hard disk (if you have a
desktop)?
The main value of a 64 bit OS is that all 4gbs of your ram, rather than 3
gbs, will be available to programs without having resort to command
switches. Program compatibility remains a problem for older programs--MS is
trying an end run around that issue by bundling a virtualizing program and
XP with Win7 Ultimate.

Re: Low Free Physical Memory

Probably a bug in the audio software you are using. I would guess that it is
calling into the system to find out if there will be enough memory available
*before* actually requesting the memory.

Prefetch, which was updated to be a bit more aggressive in Windows Vista,
will fill your available physical memory with applications you commonly use
so that when you launch the app, it is already in memory.

This memory is marked in a way that if something already running requests
more memory, the prefetch data is kicked out of memory and the memory given
to the app needing it.

Try disabling prefetch to see if that solves your problem:
