| How can I stop Temp folder expanding to take over my whole system disk? I recently noticed that the % of free space on my system disk had dropped considerably. On investigation I found that the folder <username>/AppData/Local/Temp had filled to about 55% of my 120GB drive. Many of the folders/files were months old. Is there some setting I can change to clear the folder when I log out or shut down or do I have to delete the files/folders manually? Many thanks Joe |

Use disk cleanup to clean up temp files and other settings, if you want to clean Internet temp files go into Internet Options and on the advanced tab scroll down to the box to delete temp files when the browser is closed. You really should do regular maintenance on your machine to help keep it running well. <g> -- Joan Archer http://www.freewebs.com/crossstitcher http://lachsoft.com/photogallery "Joe91" <joe.kirk@btinternet.com> wrote in message news:ufpKy3oOJHA.588@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Hi, > I recently noticed that the % of free space on my system disk had dropped > considerably. Having cleared the folder earlier I now find that I have another 92 folders in this TEMP folder. Many of them have a name of the type 'Temp10_IfraAdConnexion1.1R2-samples.zip'. The part after the underscore is a valid file name that I recognise but it is not a file I have looked at for many months, if not years nor have I opened the containing folder. It sounds like you have a misbehaving program that does not clean up after itself when the program is closed down. A well designed program WILL clean up its temporary files after it closes and leave little behind. Many people use CCleaner to handle these chores and run it on a regular basis to keep the crud at an acceptable level. http://www.ccleaner.com/ Did I mention that this little program is free? -- Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience "Joe91" <joe.kirk@btinternet.com> wrote in message news:uf9jXdpOJHA.1164@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Having cleared the folder earlier I now find that I have another 92 > folders in this TEMP folder. Thanks, I ran that (and will run it regularly) and it cleared the 2GB of files created in the last 6 hours. However, almost as quickly as those files were being deleted more were being created. Don't know whether it is Google desktop or Windows indexing service, they are the only two services that are likely to be trawling through these files. thanks again Joe "Joan Archer" <joanarcher@gmail.com> wrote in message news:eLjJWCpOJHA.1576@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Use disk cleanup to clean up temp files and other settings, if you want to > clean Internet temp files go into Internet Options and on the advanced tab > scroll down to the box to delete temp files when the browser is closed. > > You really should do regular maintenance on your machine to help keep it > running well. <g> > -- > Joan Archer > http://www.freewebs.com/crossstitcher > http://lachsoft.com/photogallery > > "Joe91" <joe.kirk@btinternet.com> wrote in message > news:ufpKy3oOJHA.588@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >> Hi, >> I recently noticed that the % of free space on my system disk had dropped >> considerably. You can limit the size of IE (Internet explorer) temp files, Under General tab (tools > Internet options; under "browsing History" you can delete immediately using the delete bottom and change/configure how much history you want to keep by using the Settings button and making adjustments. You have a lot of options; move folder to a disk other than your sysvol, change how much disk space is devoted/allocated to temp files, how many days of history to keep. Other temp files, as well as paging.swap files can be move to disks other than sysvol, its pretty much up to you to customize things outside of default configuration. As someone mentioned, if temp files are being generated at an excessive rate either some App is not cleaning up after itself or you have configured excessive logging, generating errors way outside of the norm.
