No replays and rewind time options in Ridge Racer Unbounded

I am a big fan of racing games and have played many of them. I am currently playing Ridge Racer Unbounded and found it very unsatisfying. There is no option to view or store the replays of the races we played. The game should have the rewind feature where the user can rewind certain seconds or part of the race. I think that this game won’t make it large as there is nothing new that can be expected. What do the other gamers who played this game think about the missing features?

I too miss the replay feature in the racing game. Last racing game that I played was Driver: San Francisco. It was not a pure racing game but the gameplay was completely based on driving cars. It too had replay feature where one can record a segment of time and later edit and store it in the system. This replay feature gave option to change camera angles, split time and view from any view. I never expected such high end replay system from this game, but at least they could have provided a basic replay option where one can view the replays to see the exciting moments of the race.

The replay feature is unwanted in the game. The game is an open world game and meant for quick playing. The main target audience the developers have set is the casual gamers. The casual gamers don’t spend time n viewing the replays of the races. They need quick entertainment and they tend to move on to the next race. Also in open world game, storing the data for creating a replay needs to store the animation data. The open world game where much of the things are not pre animated, storing the dynamic changes would require a large amount of storage space.

The rewinding feature would have looked cool in this game. If we make a sudden wrong move that would start drifting our car or lose the control, than the rewind feature would have helped us to get the car back on the track. Yes the rewind feature should have costed some XP or earned price. But it was needed in this game. Also the AI of this game is so hard, one wrong move and much of them zoom past us. So the rewind feature would have compensated for the tough AI.

The toughness of the game makes it last longer. If the AI was not tough as it is presently, then hardcore gamers who are habitual to such games will finish it in few hours. The difficulty makes the player repeat the races over and over again. The rewind feature again would have made the game unrealistic. In real races, no one stops for another racer who has committed some mistake. The game wants to provide a challenge and not just let the players experience the beauty of city or just drive around in a car to test its speed.

To compensate for the non availability of the rewind feature, the game world lets the player break the objects easily. In most of the racing games like Need for Speed, if a players car gets stuck behind the wall or in a pillar, the player needs to reverse the car, get it back on the street and then again accelerate and gain the speed that is lost. You can ask for rewind feature in such game as these mistakes tend to make the player lose. Using rewind feature in such situations will be helpful as player getting stuck can rewind the time and then turn his car before getting it stuck behind the solid object. But in Ridge Racer Unbounded, most of the solid objects like wall and pillars tend to break.

No rewind feature is needed in Ridge Racer Unbounded. This feature will only destroy the link that the player establishes while playing a quick paced game. Also this feature cannot be used in multiplayer mode, so a player depending barely on rewind feature will find it difficult to play online.

I think that the drifting feature of the game is bad compared to its previous versions. There is no skill required in drifting a car in this game. You just have to hit the brake key and just keep turning the car. The previous version needed player to accurately control the speed, angle of drifting to avoid the car from spinning like crazy. But in this game, there is no need for such accuracy. You can have a large amount of speed and drift your car and still it would be straight as the drift is finished. There is nothing like challenge in the drift races of this game.

Welcome to the era of casual gamers. The drifting technique which you are asking for needs intense skills which can be achieved by playing for hours. Casual gamers spend less time gaming and one cannot expect them to master the skill of perfect drifting. If the game demands the skill of drifting, the game won’t be played by casual gamers which will prove to be loss for the developers. Thus, the simple drifting techniques. Also the games main focus is on the destruction and not skills.
